Well, I am getting pretty good at front/rear pivoting right (the direction) and hopping right (also the direction), but I can't seem to do either left. It I roll parallel to a curb on my left hand side, I can't seem to even hop the 2-3" required to get off the curb. Any ideas? I usually lead with my right foot; do I need to switch feet to do moves in the 'opposite' direction?

nope, it's just a matter of learning them on flat ground with no danger!

It feels very weird at first, but you get used to it.

I agree with ThOrSHAmmEr3, practice it repeatedly on flat ground until you've got it. There really is no other advice I can give you.
