sorry if this is not strictly trials related but it may as well be because so many of us download vids all of the time...

this is for some of our internet technology wizards...

Why is it that I can only ever get a maximum data transfer rate of 84KB/sec when I have a 786MB DSL line? I've never exceeded 84....

    thanks!

786MB? You mean kbps? If you do then: 786kbps(kilo bits) equalls 98KBps(kilo bytes).
So if you have a slightly crappy isp 84KBps is not so unreasonable...

There are 8 bits to a byte.

    little b = bit
    big B = Byte

You can generally take your advertised speed and divide by 8 for the theoretical maximum, as rarely do ISPs state speed in bytes.

    yeah, I meant kpbs

now I get it, thanks for the explanation, I should have gone with the 1500kbps DSL line then.... I thought that kbps and KBps were the same thing...

Once I got something like 2045 Kbps from microsoft on an update package, does that sound right? I had two eye witnesses so the computer definataly did it and I noticed the download went super fast. I have cable so my speed depends on other people on my block. It doesnt really make sence it should be so fast does it?

How many bytes to a kilobyte? I forget if it is 1000 or 1024?

1024, MS updates run in kilobits, so you got about 255KBps

Oh sorry I meant 2045 Kb/sec - I have edited my last post. Is that even possible though?

theres still a little b, little b = bit, K can go either way and it still means kilo

It doesn't matter what you meant anyhow, since you're wrong.
