    i have always wondered, how do they do them? not by any conventional methods i believe.

    Turned to make the overall shape, and then probably a... hmm... 2.5D CNC lathe for the detailing?

    are you speaking of the actual gear ring? They might use a tool called a broach, it's pressed through the center of a hole by a hydraulic press, it has cutting edges on it like a tap, but designed to cut in a linear fashion, as opposed to a radial fashion, sort of like an inside out playdoh pumper if you know what that is
