I've got a really strange issue... I haven't ridden a lot lately but this has happened every time I get on the bike, so at least once or twice a week for the last month. This usually happens once when I first get on the bike, and then often throughout my ride. When I put my right foot on the pedal the first time and then pretty much any time I land a decent size gap, my right ankle totally folds, with my foot going inward. I have no other ankle pain, but this literally puts me on the ground out of nowhere and hurts like hell. 2 minutes later, I'm totally fine. Anyone ever had this? Should I get checked? Thanks.

Sounds like your body is aging too rapidly. I would definitely get tested for Progeria.

Sounds like a stretched or torn ligament that didn't heal properly. Go to a physiotherapist and they can recommend a brace and some exercises to improve stability.
I agree
My left ankle has a torn ligament and occasionally when im walking this happens
Never happens when im riding tho

JN have you tried changing your foot posision on pedal so pedal axle is more lined up under your leg bone giving you more stability on landings? I know you pedal kick right footed and not sure if it would affect your power in your pedal kicks. best advice would be to show up at glacial rocks today to test that theory.

I thought of this as soon as I saw this thread. Went to the doc today about my nagging ankle and he said stuff straight out of it, like to ignore the dosage on Aleve, took everything I had to keep a straight face.

Andy I know what you think of docs, but my sports med guy is alright. I have free access to 2 reiki "practitioners" but I'm a big fan of things actually getting better. I only use eastern medicine when I'm bleeding out.

Lol, I've never liked docs for a reason. I haven't been been riding cause of the weather but it seems to be getting worse on its own. I might have to go...

Sounds like you've got a pretty bad instability in your ankle, probably due to a severe sprain or rupture of your anterior talofibular ligament. I've snapped both of mine, several times, on each ankle. Unfortunately its a slow process to get them sorted properly and dependant on how severe you may need surgery.

How badly does it swell and bruise up?

Thank you for that info. What's crazy is it doesn't swell or bruise, just randomly dies on me and then is fine.

I had similar issue in my knee. It would pop/give out, hurt for a few seconds then be fine. I ended up having torn cartilage and got surgery. I couldn't understand how it would give out then feel fine with no pain or swelling. I would definitely get it looked at before you have a bigger issue.

Quit wasting time and get it properly diagnosed. Ligaments provide most of the support in the ankle and no amount of strengthening in the surrounding musculature can make up for a torn ligament. If you do in fact have a tear or some other kind of damage, the surrounding structures will have to work overtime to compensate which will likely lead to them becoming injured as well.

Thanks guys. As soon as my semester ends in 1.5 weeks I'm gonna get it checked out, not riding right now anyway. I'm currently at a desk all day 7 days a week :/

Doctor consultation with referral to specialist followed by specialist appt, MRI and assessment would be about $50-$80 for me. (or 35-55 USD)
