Ti pedal spindles are scary

Less than 3 months of riding. I weigh 175 lbs and ride fairly smoothly.

It didn't break at the crank interface. The titanium simply failed from fatigue. No more Ti pedal spindles for me.

Failed at a stress raiser... Maybe something to do with how they machined that fillet radius.

Thats what happens when you get Chinese people to work with metal...........they suck at aluminum, steel, ti, brass etc......anything to do with metal they suck at......I wish they'd just stick to fried riced and chow mein.....not being racist either..just facts.

Deng, Zhi, Trialtech, and many other brands have been manufactured in China.

And of course, I don't even need to mention MTB manufacturers such as Giant, Specialized, etc

You simply can't make that kind of general comments, at least not anymore.

My bro broke steel version just like that,so it´s not about material, the axle is just too thin, only like 2/3 of mg-1 axle.

Titanium will work harden. I sell hardware to guys who race sailboats and every now and then I have a guy who wants to use Titanium shackles to lose some weight out of the mast on their boats. I always tell them that they should be replaced every year especially if they are ocean racing. Not everyone listens to me and then they call and complain when a shackle breaks...

Cheers,
Jim

I've heard the second gen' ones suck, i'm still on my first pair of first gen ones (steel axle). I'm not a smooth rider, offen to 6-7-8 ft drops and had them almost two years.

My Blackspire sub-3s are holding up pretty well. I've landed on rocks a couple times with them and the rock barely knicked off the paint. They're super swank looking too without having some scary looking axle.

And Alex, don't kid yourself on being smooth...you're a fucking hack.

So does copper, so don't use pennies. Feel free to explain how a material getting stronger makes it worse.

PS work hardening had zero to do with this.

I've been using my MG-1 tis for the better part of 3 years now (knock on wood). For about half of that they were on my DH bike, and bore quite a few rock strikes so now they both have play, but the axles are straight and intact. While they were on my DH bike I ran Echo SL ti cage pedals on my trials bike, and I just recently ripped the cage off one, but both axles are fine. I'm 140lbs and smooth but still fuck up now and then. In my experience the worst thing you can do for a pedal is jump backwards to rear if you don't make it up something. That puts more force on it than any drops/gaps I've done.

Stronger but more brittle. I do not claim to be an expert but in the Grand Prix sailing world, where I have worked as well as raced for 25 years, it is well known that titanium parts need to be replaced regularly where as a stainless item will last for years.

I also believe you are wrong about work hardening not playing a part in this failure.

Cheers,
Jim

Doesn't a material need to go into plastic deformation before work-hardening can take place? My spindle didn't bend; it just snapped suddenly.
