Gear ratio on dj bike set up for trials

Ok so here's what's goin on. Ive been riding street and dirt for2 years. And have just recently gained the ability to rear wheel hop and a few other things. I have a dj frame I am going to build up to play around with trials type riding. It is a Gt ruckus uf frame that I am putting a rigid fork on. The stOck front gear is a 28 t. Would a 20 t on the rear give me a decent ratio for mild trials riding

Pretty close, 1.4 maybe a touch tall. I have a similar setup (dj frame set up w/ a few trials parts) that I use for some street and park trials. I am running 1.33. Your taller gearing will be better if you are doing any high speed stuff.

What all trials parts did you use and what standard dj parts did you keep? I was just gonna go rigid from shirt gears and a longer stem

If your definition of mild trials is a pedal kick once in a blue moon, it's just not worth changing parts. Only change parts if you're never going to get a trials bike because a dj frame modded with trials parts will suck at both trials and everything else because trials parts aren't good for anything else. Just change your gear ratio and call it a day.....

Well I have no personal definitions of trials riding. I have another dj bike that I use for street. This bike is going to be a stepping ston to decide if I want to buy a specific trials bike

FYI, typical dedicated stock has a ratio of 1.2 (18/15).

I just got done talking with a guy here in pgh that rides an stp with gears. He uses a smaller front ring I believe a 22 or 24 front with a rear cassette

I practise on my dj/4x bike i was running 38t front with 9 speed, using third gear to gap and rear wheel hop.( was about 28t i think...)
works out around 1.35 ratio, got my rear wheel hops to a little above knee height and gaps almost a bike lenght.

Had to change to a single speed set up, only had a 26t front and a 16t rear available, so now im at about 1.62 ratio, this is way tooo hard for pedal kicks and any slow rockcrawling . ( good for manuals and gaps though.)

aim <1.35 i'd say because you can still do a bit of everything.

Trials parts might suck for dirt jumping but dirt jump parts can work quite well for trials. I run 22/18 on mine (about 36/18 in overdrive on the hammerschmidt), I have ridden trials bikes but still prefer mine for trials, always afraid I am going to snap a trials frame and they are really awkward for bunny hopping.

Are you running a hammerschmidt with single speed rear? I've wanted to do that ever since they came out but too expensive

Yes, I got it set up on a transition bank, but any bike with iscg tabs will do. If you get all the parts new its about 550, or you can find them used online for around 400. The fr version has a slightly wider q factor than the am but other than that there isn't a big difference between them. Also the am and fr bb's are not interchangeable. The 1.6 difference between gears gives you a good gear for trials and a good one for dirt jumping and in the lower trials gear it is locked so the performance is still good if you use a single speed hub (I am running a hope pro 2 ss on mine). Instant shifting allows for crazy acceleration.

That sounds like a sweet setup. One of my favorite frames too. Sounds like your bike is on my dreamlist

I installed a ridgid fork, King rear hub, and a longer stem. My bike is a dual disc, so I also put 185mm rotors on it. I already had wide bars on it.

1. It's expensive
2. It's heavy
3. If you do sprocket stalls on everything you would be better off getting the gummybash.

For me, having two gears / instant shifting and being able to ride trials and jumps on the same bike during the same ride makes it worth it. I have been very happy with mine. I have also bashed mine a decent amount by accident and have not had any problems with it, but I went for the freeride version with the stronger bash and bb.

^ i've ridden with mikeo, and it really is a nice bike, the hammerschmidt quick switching is sweet. it makes going from spot to spot a breeze for him as i pedal like a mofo on my trials specific. i'm running 16/14 on mine., which i don't think will work too well for DJ.

haha, I put an ejector seat on it now too, It could pretty much be used as an XC bike when the seat is 8" above slammed. Also, got some thin / light bling canfield brothers crampon pedals.
