Zap Taps to rear

I've noticed that you don't see this move very much. It seems super efficient and smooth. I bet it's very useful riding natty. It doesnt seem to be very difficult. My question is, does the front land onto the object for a preloading purpose?

You use the front wheel to get more power.

I do a 1/4 pedal one at 1:51 in here which you can watch at 0.25x speed:

I do preload the front to get a boost. But I feel like much higher than that the bike gets too vertical to do it effectively.

Also I've always called it a "touch-up" .

Better riders: if I'm using completely hack technique, let me know.

I believe JYdog is talking about this and more specifically at 1:15ish and on:

And he's right, you really never see this in videos.

He and I are wondering why that is...

Yes I know. The one in my video was a 1/4 pedal one, not a half-stroke. I remember in Kenny's LA video he does a touch-up to manual on a rail.

It's funny - after watching all the basic trials moves Leech, pretty much the ONLY move I can do and practice regularly is the Zap Tap lol.. So far it's a good way to work my way UP obstacles, as opposed to across.

Just put this vid up:

Old school move for sure... I think it was a move more on real bikes back in the day, on pogo sticks people just go to rear or wheel swap because you can do it so high w new frames.

Good one to know and learn.

isn't this just riding up an object? Like riding up a curb but bigger? I didn't know it had a name as I didn't think riding up a curb needed one :P

i always thought that was a rollup, i used to be able to do those around wheelbase height on a stock.

Ali, riding up a curb is called a zap tap, just like sidehopping a curb is called a sidehop. Just because it's not very cool doesn't mean it doesn't have a name. You have a name, don't you?

straight on the attack, that was fast!

I have many names, most of my friends call me dick nose actually.

I see your point, however I think people could benefit with going out and experimenting with riding without getting bogged down with names of moves. "zap tap" is a horrible name for anything.

Just thought you were being a bit of a downer. I think it used to be called the Jap slap, but that's not very PC.

"Zap tap"

If you go to both it's called "rolling up"
If you go to rear it's called a touch up.

On low objects less than about head tube height, you can use the front wheel to preload. Once it gets higher, that's not going to work. The real purpose is standardizing the timing and making sure you're close to the object.

Where is shakes? He needs to yell at you all for discussing the names of techniques and remind us all that we should be riding instead

Oh wait I just saw Ali C already did that.

I've never seen any names used consistently other than zap tap or zap tap to the rear wheel for this technique, and it needs a name if its going to be discussed. Sorry, name haters. "Roll up" to me just implies you're rolling up and over an obstacle without any pedal strokes, but I have seen that name used somewhat consistently as well...that's what TrashZen calls it.

i would be riding but a mexican asked me if there was a helicopter in my yard and then i got the flu

rollups at the maximum height are fun, theres some nice rock walls im going to go ride when my nose stops crying, i dont think ill be able to go as high as i could on a stock though because of my little toy wheels

When I hear "zap tap" I picture lightning bolts and magical phenomena.

The jap slap(tire tap) came around the late 90's, if I remember correctly. It's a move where you'd hit the front tire into the object an then shoot to the rear wheel.Within the last few years,I haven't seen it used much..

What, people don't tap anymore?

I "zap tap" (always called them a touch hop which sounds far less shitty) all the time, didn't realise it was thought of as "old school".
