I searched, and the thing I heard about is v’s, and maguras is the difference in modulation. But i am wondering if V's will stop you as fast as magura hs33's? I mean, i am a big guy (210 pounds) Most of the riders I have seen are not that heavy. I want to use V's because I can work on them, and they work the same in cold or hot. I don't have to bleed this, bleed that because I am not familiar with the process, and I don’t like making costly mistakes.

Thanks in advance

yes, if you get a good pair, with good pads, and a well run cable and lever.

what is a good setup for rear v's? Shimano XTR or avid ultimate v's? I am going to be using a avid disc up front. also, what pads?

XTR arms are shite because of paralell push. id get avid ultimates if i were you. i had a set loved em. best ever. if you dont want to spend htat kind of $ a shimano deore or somthing like that is about as good as you can get.

the lever and cable route is what makes the biggest difference. get an XTR or avid ultiamate lever set. nothing else will suffice, dont even try to save on this. then try and get a decent cable. (XTR cable is like $16 and works great) then run it full length housing and short as possible with as little of bends as you can get. on most frames dont even touch the cable stops. just use zip ties so you can get your cable/housing secured in the best place possible.

plazmatic pads should be your best bet, but kool-stop salmons are like $6 and work great also. and above all, run a heavy grind on your rim.

v-brakes work much better than maguras on a 2-bolt (v-brake boss, etc) frame. the only time one should use maguras is on a 4-bolt dedicated frame.

i had a set of avid ultimate levers/arms on my zoo!. they were awesome brakes. best ever. but expensive. yo ucan save a little money on XTR levers. but other than that, if you want top quality brakes, you have to spend as much or more than you would on a magura.

You dont have to bleed maguras unless you break something

Elan said right.

This is like the only thing we seem to agree on.

There's heaps of threads with heaps of insight, just search.

Yea, what fennell said -- i've only had to bleed once last season, but if you're bent on getting Vs, XTRs r ok, but ultimate Vs are a lot more user friendly cuz they're not parallel push or whatever. you could try out the new hs33's that're out now

xtr's are NOT 'ok' for trials, you'll kill them quickly and then they're fucked and no good for anything.

i run cheap avids, cheap levers, and kevlar cables, and as long as i keep a heavy grind on my rim it almost never slips on me, but i one day have a dream of getting the ultimates

I've used XTR brakes in the front and never had a problem. I would never ever think about using them as a rear brake but for a front brake they seem to work out better. But I like disc better as a front brake:D
