View Full Version : I have an idea?

I was wondering. I have seen alot of bashed downtubes. I was thinking of putting some kind of guard on the down tube of my frame? I was going to attach a long small piece 3/16" x 1" of aluminum stock to the bottom of the downtube. I would drill holes in the frames downtube, and putt in threaded rivets to attach the bar stock. Would drilling 1/4" holes in the frames downtube take too much strength away?

What do you think? Can you think of any others ways of doing this other than having to drill holes in the frame?

I don't know if this has been discussed before, but if it has, sorry for the repost.

Thanks in advance,
Kirby

That doesn't sound like such a good idea... Methinks PVC and duct tape would work better.

People put all kinds of materials from tires to aluminum plate like you mentioned but why not industrial strength double sided tape like another member did to his Coust? I wouldn't personally drill a hole...

strong tape- dont drill holes in your frame. or hose clamps, might not be the prettiest thing but they work.

how do you think hose clamps would work to hold on the bar stock?

Hey Kir-b
Nice signature!! Oh, and please don't drill any holes in tha nice new RAVen 5.0 of yours. And your down tube already has a super nice bash thing built in to it, just ride it buddy, it'll take a beating. Also, do a search for downtube protectors, there are a few threads on here about this

Another idea, pvc pipe and sticky-backed velcro:

Just cut a piece of 1-1/4 "-- 1-1/2 "abs pipe down the middle (pain in the ass by the way) cut another piece maybe...one inch beside the initial cut and then snap it right onto your down tube. Simple as cake.

Or just wrap some flex tube around it with zipties...doesn't work as well as abs or pvc, but still bumpers a little.

Why dont you ride backwards and do all moves backwards so the downtube wont get hit?

how do you think hose clamps would work to hold on the bar stock?my mistake i thought we were talking about a plate of metal or plastic. i guess it would be a bit of a bastard to hose clamp down a bar on your downtube...

You could try this I think it would be bad ass but who know how much weight it would add. http://www.rhinolinings.com/

just drill it, water bottle cage holes are no bigger than 1/4" and I've never seen a downtube crinkle b/c of them. In fact there ought to be holes there just for this reason, to screw your protector on- next thing out from Giant.

I have to agree, Trauma's looks better than any I've ever seen. I think you might even be able to sell those damn things. I'd buy one just to be lazy and not do it myself!! Seriously, thats a real good job man, nice and simple, but still stylin', and doesn't look like a piece of plumbing hardware stuck to your bike

yea that does look sick, but im still a fan of just riding your bike, honestly your chainstays are going to get more mangled then your downtube, expecially if u ride urban

xxxfr might be right for mods but stocks don't really take any chainstay abuse...

It's stuck on with double sided tape...the Industrial kind...but the regular stuff works good, It's almost like foam..so theres a little shock absorbtion there as well, and it hold like a bastard .It weighs next to nothing drilled out and is strong as hell.. just a little peice of mind..I know alot of people might think it's lame..but I would rather hit a $2.00 peice of pvc than dent my frame...seen downtubes fold up like a taco after being dented, and you can re paint it as it gets hacked.
