I was thinking of getting an hope XC rear hub. I was wondering if it was a good alternative to a XT. I can't afford a king as of right now. But I want a hub that will hold up for the time being, and I get a king in the summer,or when i find the need.
The hub should work fine for a while, as long as you arent in it for the engagement points and such. I know people that have used these hubs or similar for most of their trials riding life. But as soon as they get a King they wonder why they left it so long.
Do it, but if you can save some coin, dont waste money on it that you could put towards a king.

I'm getting a hope xc to start with, I was just wondering if I'm gonna have a problem with cogs "digging in", as is sometimes the case with other hubs running an ss setup for trials. ie. Kings.

I've run an XC for a year or so. I ran a 18t cog which i had from breaking up a cassette, therefore it was really thin. It did dig in, i ran it for about 6 months at a time before i snapped the axel, so i sent it to Hope and they replaced the freehub body, so i couldn't see how much it would dig in over a longer period.
Anywho, a DX, King Kog or full cassette would be fine, you get a steel freehub body as standard on the XC's so it's not as bad as Alu.
Many riders here use Hopes for years without trouble, and there are alot of advanced level riders still running XC's.
I have to say though, once you turn to the way of the King, you'll never look back.

I wouldn't do it....look at it this way.
Rear XC hub $150-200
lace it to a rim $40 You're looking at a prospective $240 on a hub you WILL replace later.
King $260
Lacing it $40 $300 total....you spent only $60 more vice the $240 you'de have to spend to get the hub ON TOP of spending the money for the King.....
It's cheaper in the end, and you'll not hate yourself for not switching earlier...

Sorry for opening this old thread, but why make another one on the same topic. I was wondering what kind of engagement a Hope XC has compared to a Shimano XT? At this time I have a atom labs hub, and I thinks its had enough after 3 years of urban bashing, and 6 months of trials.
I don't have a a lot of money to spend, so no king for right now, but I need a decent cheap hub for right now.

6 month's isnt enough time to save for a king :dunno:
If you are riding single speed, perhaps get a surly disc freewheel hub and an ACS claws.

you could get a novatec. they are singlepeed but mine has worked fairly well for the time being. its got about 40 engagement points and when people try my bike they dont notice a difference between it and a king. i know its not gonna last nearly as long but its not a bad alternative. they cost about 120CAD so not to pricy either.
shimano hubs are absolute trash for trials, and hope is a quality product, it has faster engagement than shimano, but not a whole lot better... whats shimano 8? somthing, hope, 36?

shimano is 16, hope is I think 36. hope kicks shimano. Just get it, and if you upgrade, put the hope on an XC/whatever bike.
