Ok...I found a random formula disc hub around the shop I work at and I am planning on building up a spare street wheel. It will be disc only and I have it down to two rims. WEIGHT IS NOT AN ISSUE. What do you think Mammoth or Doublewide? Which of those two would be stronger? Assuming the same lacing pattern (3x...) let me know your thoughts. THIS WILL BE A STREET/some light trials wheel.

um, double wide of cource... the double wide is like 4 times stronger than the mamoth. and 4 times heavier

double wides dent fairly easy, despite what most think. but out of the two a dwide might be a better bet. personally if weight weren't an issue why not get teh Halo SAS combat or an arrow racing? Those are bombproof rims that WILL NOT dent OR get out of true no matter what you do to them!

Mammoth is narrow and has a tendency to split at the seam. (happend to mine) Also its easy to pinch on it

bah, the mammoth is CRAP and the doublewide is soft. ive heard mavic's 321's were reaqlly hard to trash, but they're not as wide as some would like. neither is the mammoth, so its a much better choice. i have the new x823's on my hardtail and have beat the piss out of them, they're basically the 32 or 36 hole rim only version of the new dee max wheelset. i'd say they'd build up a pretty stout wheel. you need to build it with double butted spokes, use a thin layer of grease on the nips. grease allows stupid high tensions. db spokes are stronger than straight gauge (go for 14/15). go for the dt super comps if you want the baddest ass spokes around.

or, go to your local machine shop and buy a block of steel. have them drill out the center to accept an axle and a freehub. cut the edge to accept a tire. leave a 1 inch wide bead. viola.

but why do you want a tank for a wheel?

the only rim stupider-er than the mammoth (butter alloy from the future brehh!) is the double wide (exploseevo and heavy? cool.. well, see ya later).

if you are looking for a burly rim, that d3.1 rim is great or 832 or whatever they are calling it now. i would look into the atomic laboratories rims- those things are nothing but good. everyone in colorado i knwo that has had rim trouble has loved those rims. i would say arrow is another option though i would suggest the atom lab one first.

do 3x lacing, 14/15g spokes, brass nips.

i will have the say that the mavic d3.1 is insanely strong and hard. i have done some pretty sketchy shit with it, and it looks and rolls preistine. i thought i fucked it up pretty good once, took it to the wheel stand, perfectly true. its pretty expensive, like $90 retail, and from what ive seen its kind of a rare find.

even though its on the front of my trials bike. i dont see ever having to replace the rim...it will probably outlast my WTB laserdisc lite hub by a few years, haha.

i had some of those atomlab trail pimps on my ellsworth when i first got it, those things looked like they were built very well, and they get really good reviews from huckers and shit i guess.

Arrow Racing rims= Hard alloy, super strong, stay true long, pain in the ass to lace

Double wide= soft alloy, dent VERY easily, less of a pain to build, harder to true

Mammoth= junky narrow rim that tires roll off of easily, pinned seam that seems weaker that other pinned joint I.E. rhino lite etc...

Just my opinions though

So it's a disc specific rim, but most of my DH friends get Mavic 321s, which I think are called 729 now. I've seen the stupidity that my buds ride over/through with those rims, bottoming out all the time. They're very strong rims. I suspect that you could grind a small brake track into it and use thinline pads like coolstops:)

Just a thought

...It will be disc only ....
321 seems like a pretty good option - little expensivo?

my cousin has had doublewides on both his bikes (specialized p2, bighit) and he does some really big crap on both of them, with little to no air pressure, but he hasnt gotten a single dent, flatspot or bend in either bikes wheels. evne through 3 weeks of DH at plattekill, killington and mount snow.

ive heard that the atomlab wheel is the strongest you can buy, but its also sorta narrow isnt it?

street bike. rims should be narrower and taller profile. doublewides are trash rims compared to what else is out there.

thats another good point, why would you want something that wide for street?

those halo wheels are pretty sweet too. have you been to unrealcycles.com? bens got the most burly parts for your hardtail that youll ever find, and its all at a good price too. unless your going through your shop or something, then dont listen to me.

I know of ALOT of people that rode Alex Supra D rims. There were a couple people on on Pinkbike that to prove how strong they were rode them down a stairset with no tires, jumped a 5 set and the rims didn't untrue, taco or even dent. Sounds kinda unbeleivable to me, but there were ALOT of people to account for it. So take it for what it's worth.

***shitty wireless router settings**

LOTS of the NSMB.com guys swear by this rim, and considering weight isn't an issue, why not give it a try? Same goes for the Alwaysmad guys too.....
