It sounds like you're just very new to the sport. You will learn to rock with time, you just have to practice it, I can't really offer any specific advice on how to do it, it just happens :\.

As for being off balance immediately and turning your crank back a half turn when going to your rear wheel, these are also normal things for beginners. You'll get better with time. To try and prevent rotating that pedal backwards, you can start with your front pedal lower when you go to rock to rear or you can learn to use a small pedal stroke to go to rear tire.

I'm confident you'll be out of the problem shortly, however. I've seen every new rider (it happened to me too) go through those same problems.

It's instinct, I did it for a while too. You could've cranked it a bit above what's comfy and after that, it just gets worse. I'd also suggest being more careful with the backwards balance, like, hop larger to the back, might help. It might also have something to do with uneven pressure the pedals, the higher pedal isn't getting enough pressure, so the bottom one just kinda pushes it out. it's like learning to dance, you'll trip on your own toes a couple of times because you're figuring out where to put your feet and how. Just keep at it. Hope this helps.

Hope this helps more:

You also need to learn to keep pressure on the forward pedal. When I first started I had problems with my front pedal slowly ratcheting back because I was trying to keep my weight distrubuted evenly between both feet. As you ride more you will learn to weight the front foot a little more then the back foot.

Rocking is awesome, but I think it sucks....cause I can't rock for shit. I need to learn how, cause almost IMMEDIATLY when I come to a stop I turn my wheel to trackstand, and my weight instantly goes to trackstand...so it's not centered.....causing problems when I goto set0up for a gap that requires accuracy....learn to rock, it's better for ya...

When rocking don't try to link pivots together and correct, just throw the bike forwards and backwards. It's likely that your cadence is too low. Just try to go forwards and backwards as fast as you can and then you'll get it.

Yeah when I was learning I heard its better to go front wheel pivots to your choco side, and the opposite when you are going to the other side. Now I've refined so much I'm not sure if it was bull or if I worked it down to a tee.

i always track stand on rocks/natural (uneven angles etc). rocking takes to much effort much of the time, and hops are good to get rid of if possible. it's good to learn both though.

it just takes practice to learn. make small corrections with each rock, that's why they were invented ;) if you have a rigid fork it should be cake....

Observedtrials.net ROCKS !!

just hang around here more often, it will sharpen your wit and tune your sarcasm.

As for improving your riding, only you and your bike can do that. Watching videos is good too, for inspiration and guidance, just don't fall into the trap of feeling sorry for yourself because everyone seems so good, everyone started somewhere.
