Ooo, I like it. I could always wait for the Zoo! version to come out though! Haha. No, really, I like it.

That looks really good, but I don't think the chainstay yoke would last more than five minutes

Cool, geometry? Adding another good frame to buy is always good.

Yeah. And it looks like it will snap in the middle part of the frame. So it probably will. Those guys who designed it are complete idiots and don't know what they're doing...

Taking a closer look, he has disc mounts on there, yet, there is no reinforcement for it to be a disc system. There is a dual "seattube" V- design......how flexy would that be? Wow...it looks odd to say the least...irrational design may be an understatement...

Considering every single previous vario broke, I wouldn't be the first to jump on.

I know of one vario frame that isnt broken. It is sitting in Chris Pascucci's basement...dont know if it was ever built...

that frame looks busted, I don't know how it'd perform, but looks kinda retarded

a friend of mine has been thrashing his vario for 2 years, and no crack. Same with a few other of my friends (y)

just because a prototype frame has dropouts with a disk mount on them doesnt mean the production frame is meant to be run with disks. it's probably whatever cheap ass dropout they could pull off the shelf and not worry about.

coramoor- didnt you know that every member on this board can tell everything about anything with a simple glance at as little as one picture and give a complete elemental analysis a part's structure with their eyes. just like the xtp mod dropouts.... every weld on everything ever.... this chainstay yoke.... (note- sarcasm) darsh.

I too was pondering on the disc drop-out they chose to use. It was probably just the case that the dropout they decided to use (which appears to be the same as on my es3) happened to have those puney disc mounts.
just fyi: the new planetX "Tibo", which I believe is designed by the same fellow, does have a disc mount that is meant for trials abuse.

If you are refering to the his old yellow vario mod bike, the chain stay was cracked, thats why it was not built up....

that was like 1998ish when he cracked it....

yeah looks too much like one of those girls bike frames, you know how the top tup is kinda like a vee.... yes and i hope they are just random dropouts, cos that tap would pull off in a second...
Id like to see a painted version, but so far it looks sketch and yeah.....nuff said

what the fuck do you know about "irrational design"? Look at the design. It's obvious he was going more for asthetics than functionality. I mean, seriously, look at how many uneccesary tubes and joints there are. And if you also look at the warranty of the Planet Xs, they don't cover damages from disk brake usage.....I think that's pretty retarded to put tabs on a trials frame that can't be used for trials. Like somebody is gonna buy a trials dedicated frame and use it for dirtjumping or freeriding...

Those dropouts looks exactly like the ones like the ones on planet x zebdi(2003 at least) , 24 pornking , my pitbull and probably others. The thing is it's often cheaper to use dropouts with disc mounts than it is to use dropouts without disk mounts. Simply because every non trials bike is made with disk mounts and they make way more dropouts with disk mounts. And as WhiteravenKS said, the production version might not have them.

Despite all other replies on this topic, I actually like the looks a bit. And if the top tube was relocated a little further back at the bottom junction(more like a coust ,or pitbull) I think it would sell rather well. That's of course if people could afford them, weren't the Varios a little over priced? Oh, and of course the Disc mounts really do look like one squeeze of a hope or magura Louise lever would send the caliper and mount flying off !

Hey All,

Actually the old Vario bikes were very durable. The looks were love it or hate it without a doubt.... I thought it looked cool.... though I was certainly not in the majority. And it was long and low.... when that was not so popular here. It was heavy during a weight weenie fad (think it was about 4.5 or 4.75 pounds). Yes, it was expensive.... remember something like $800 a frame or so. So, over a couple years of dealing with them, I do not think there were more than a ten or 15 sold (at least that I was involved with). I can think of 5 or 6 people off the top of my head that have them still and they are not broken. More than a few of them will attest to the durability of them. The only one I remember breaking (of the 5 or so mods that were brought in during the same time frame) was Chris Pascuccis....... refused to wrap/protect his chain stay and basically sawed throught it. Other than that I can't remember any others breaking..... though 5 and 6 years on I am sure it would be a miracle that at least a couple have been tormented to death.
The drop out disc mount. I do understand why a company does not warranty the disc tab. If the mounting is not inboard, like the Diamond Back (and later Brisa), the caliper is just wating to be impacted.... thus weakening the tab if this is repeated more than a few times. It is not really a defect....average bike aluminum twisted/jerked/stressed due to impact over time will fail. Should they just not put them on..... their call I guess.
The new one looks pretty cool..... maybe in a cantilever kind of way it will stiffen the BB area? Plausable, but I am not an engineer. A couple years ago Leeson proved with their mod bike that the twin seat tube deal could help stiffen things up down there.
Anyway...... I still think the old Varios looked pretty cool.... very stiff seat stays........
