hey everyone! my names Myk. i'm from saint john new brunswick, canada, and well, i'm new to trials. i've always been interested in it but just recently got into it enough to start looking for a trials specific bike. right now, i own a 03 specialized p2. not the greatest trials bike thats for sure. at the moment, i mostly ryde street, but, i sort of have my rig set up trials like. (ie. long stem, small front gear and hydro disc brakes) ryan leech has been my main influence in wanting to ryde trials. after seening manifesto, i've been trying to do trials on my bike. however, not really happening. more so, i put trials into my street ryding. at the beginning of this season, a buddy of mine got an 02 evolve for a good price. hes been ryding everyday, and is doin good. i recently seen a vid of him doin some lurching and well that was it for me. i really wanted a trials bike. i then see a vid with Neil Tunnicliffe in it. AMAZING! simply amazing! so i'm in the mood to by a trials bike, and most likely will, within the next month or so. so heres where the debate begins.

my bud, leech, and neil all ryde stock trials bikes. personally, i think these will be a bit easier to ryde for me, due to me having a street bike now. however, much harder to learn on. as well, i've just run into a deal, involving a monty mod trails bike. full set up, for a sweet price. now i know leech started out on a mod, and probably many others do as well. my question is: is it easier to learn trials on a mod, then a stock? and, after learning on a mod, does it make learning on a stock easier?

living paycheck to paycheck sucks, and if i get this mod, it will be one complete paycheck. chances are, if i get the mod, i won't like it at first. but, that is normal. i'm willing to do what i have to, to get somewhat good at trials. and if a mod would be easier, great! opinions on the matter would be great too! thanks for the help!

Myk

Anybody who says "get a mod, it's sole purpose is for trials" Well uh, WTF do you think the purpose a stock bike is?

Try to experiance both a mod and stock, and see which one "fits" you better. Mostly in ya know, size to you, but which you think you're gonna be more comfy learning on. DO NOT base your riding stock opinion on a P2 set-up "like trials" as riding a real dedicated trials bike is 100% different. Only things similar are the size of the wheels.....

Alot of bigger people ride mods, so don't base it on "it feels small"....base it on what you think will suit you better. ANd alsosearch around some, and find the pro's and cons of riding stock and mod....THEN make your decision...

Oh...and on another not "ryde" is spelt "ride" and the context you're using "by" should be spelt "buy".....

in response to that. note my name. Myk, not Mike. ryde..ride. same thing. just my way of spelling it. buy, my fault. typing to fast.

inresponse to your first post, thank you! i'm gonna try out the mod first, see what i think and all that jazz. as well, i'm gonna try my bud's evolve. as you said, best suits me. if it were up to me, i'd have one of each, which might happen in the long run

Just keep in mind that evolve will ride NOTHING like a 'real' dedicated trials bike, stock bikes these days are only different from mod bikes in their wheelsize...

i hate when ppl ask me "when are you going to get a real trials bike?" refering to a mod bike (i ride stock...obv)....i always reply, how is a mod bike a real trials bike? Its called a fucking modified trials bike....it had to be modified from some other type of trials bike then...one that came first....you know, a stock bike......

to me, a real trials bike is a stock bike, and if leech is your inspiration, and you still want to do street and park riding, your best bet would be to get a shorter bike, under 1050 wheelbase, rigid fork, shorter stem (depending on your height), and some riser trials bars, like the try-all or woodmans.....

o and btw, if your planning on keeping the p2 for street and stuff, i wouldnt, switching between the geometry of a trials bike and p2 w/ a suspenion fork will drive you mad, and mess up your riding.....

Yeah...those half ass bikes like the Evolve will feel more like a MTB posing as a trials bike....you'de almost get the same results out of just switching all your parts on your P2 to "trials stuff"....

Like Andrew said....nowadays, the only "real" difference in feel between a mod and a stock is wheelsize.....

On the spelling.....people on here are anal on the grammar...i.e this is not Trialsforum.uk.....

lol. ryde is about the only thing i spell, aside from my name, like that. occasionally i spell tire, with a "Y" but....whatever.

i notice that some people, such as Super T, tyler classen, has 3 or 4 different bikes. no trials rig, but, a heckler, v10, and a hardtail if i'm not mistaken. as well, i also have a 02 norco atomik. and as all of you have been stating, the geometry is different in both. do you think that if i use my p2 for a street/park bike, and a mod for trials, that i'll have that hard a time rIding?(lol)

everyone says that if you have a bmx background, you'd kill on a mtb. which is true. i know plenty of guys that have a bmx background, and now ride street, and are fuckin amazing! could this be true with a mod as well. ride trials on a mod, then use the p2, and make riding street/park easier? i donno how many of you have 2 bikes, or even ride street. i'm assuming that most of you just ride trials? this is a trials forum.(here i am talkin about street :S)

Naw, I'm a BMX racer/MTB street and mod trials guy. Spending 7 years racing BMX bikes helped sway me onto a mod, seeing as I'm used to ridind tiny bikes. I'm a big guy, but, my xlite fits fine. Has trials helped my street? Yeah, its given me more confidence. Other than that, I dunno.

No, many of us have many bikes. I have no idea what your logic is, it makes no sense.

Yeah go ride a mod, that will transfer to street on a P2 much better than a stock trials bike :hsugh: :ugh2:

I'm pretty sure mods came first..... I thought the term mod was just referring to it being a modified bike? Didnt Stock Bikes not come onto the scene until like 7 years ago or something?

Its all so confusing....:dunno:

Nope, 26 inchers came first to the trials scene, but soon they realised a modified 20' bike could do better. That was in the time, mainly due to geometry issues, the mod had a waaaaay better behavior in trials. But now, thanks to short chainstays and long top tubes, they're side to side. It's like the vees being used first, then the maggies, then we're going back to vees.

Stock came first. The mod was the first to be specialized for trials.

Don't dig up old threads like this, please. :)

It's all about FUN !!! I have a stock, a ht mtb, a dh/fr mtb - and I also want a mod because bmx is my background so I think I'd like that too. They all ride different, they are all FUN to ride, they all excell at different types of riding, I choose one to ride based on where and how I feel like riding. Trials has helped all my riding immensely, in many ways. It's fun to do trials stuff on a ht street bike. As well, riding the others helps my trials in minor ways.
Have fun riding, have as many bikes as you want.

Currently 13 bikes in the house... each of them different. I get on the one best suited to what I want to ride, or I take one out because I simply want to ride it in particular, so I inevitably wind up on the terrain that best suits it.

There are also numerous bikes from my past, bought, sold, destroyed, stolen , or whatever their fate. What it all comes down to is that for those of us that have discovered it, cycling is fun. Lots of us will never do downhill, dirt jump, trials, race on a velodrome, tour on a recumbent, and so on. Ideally, there would be someone locally that would have a bike you could see, feel, and ride. To some people, mod trials feels all wrong. To some it feels like what you wanted all along.

Now, I am not going to try out too many trials moves on a loaded tourer. But then again, I never intend to ride over 100 miles in a day on my trials bike. But I love 'em all.
