View Full Version : Try All Sticky in hot weather...weird...

yes, I wrote a glowing review of the Try All Sticky tire a little while ago and it's still awesome, but I think that I should add, that now after having it for like 4 months I still have plenty of tread left, and I do a lot of riding to get from spot to spot. I'm really happy with the life of the tire, my last Maxxis 40a SRY Minion DH didn't last as long...
however, something weird is going on...
Now that summer has finally come, as in 3 days ago, I have done three rides with temps in the 80's. I have pinched on each ride and they didn't even happen on anything that should have caused a pinch. In the previous 4 months I didn't pinch, or maybe only once. So has anybody else had this happen to them in hot weather? Does the compound of the Sticky get softer when hot, enough to cause a performance loss? To me it even feels softer to the touch but I could be imagining it...My Maxxis tires didn't do this.

temps in the 80s, thats not hot at all.
My guess would be that you just had bad luck recently with pinch flats. It feels sticker because your over-active imagination is making you think that.

I dont want to add to a false fire, but seriously, Ive had 3 flats in the past 2 weeks as compared to 2 flats in the 6 months before that with my TryAll.
Ive been trying things a little higher, etc. But I dont think Ive been too abusive. I would get a flat, come inside, see the snake bites, sit there perplexed, go out, two days later, same thing.
I will agree with planetary that the tire hasnt worn as much lately, it seems that it did in the beginning, but now it seems to be holding some tread.
So pinch flats are a little come common as of right now, but the grip is still the same for me, I want to say better, but I think Ive just learned to inch my way up things a little more efficiently now.
But there ya' go planetary, it might not all be in your head.

my try all's have been very consistent. It's probably just a stroke of bad luck recently.

you have the 2.5 right? what does it actually measure to at the widest part of the treads?
does the stickyness of this tire create a higher rolling resistance?

if you're refering to me i'm on mod. you don't even have to worry about size this thing is awesome. grip is very good.
yes, the tyres have much rolling resistance, but i just put my front tyre on backwards to lessen it. so far so good.
don't get these tyres if you enjoy riding to your favorite urban spot. get them if you like wet slimey rocks ;)

Long shot.. but check your pressure.. in the heat you might have to keep it up a bit more as you lose air faster. Could be causing your pinches and giving you the feel of more grip (from lower pressure) at the same time.

heat should increase pressure on a given ride.. i guess the hot and cold expansion may be causing u to loose it faster over days... just make sure u have the right pressure in the morning, once it gets hot, it should only get higher.

by performance loss I was only referring to the recent lack of pinch flat resistance. In all other aspects the tire is as awesome as ever. Sometimes I can't believe that tire. Last week we had a rainy day ride on wet rocks along a stream and the phrase of the day was, "I can't believe I just stuck that." It performed better than I could have hoped for. Basically, I didn't slip. If your balance is on then that tire will stick.
....To the person who asked how wide it is, I don't know but it fits in my Brisa frame on an ECHO (Alex DX32) rim with plenty of room. I'd measure it for you but it's 4 floors below in the basement right now...

I'm also thinking about a tryall for the rear. But I'm considering a 2.35 minion 40sry dual ply as well. I had the 2.5 high roller 42st before, and it was a little too much for me. I think a 2.35 is enough. What would you recommend?
The tryall compound is definately slightly softer than maxxis 42st. I touched both. So if I go for the maxxis, 40sry will be my choice.

My Intense FRO DH 2.35 is the same width as Michelin 24.1 and only 29 grams heavier(1190g compared to 1219g).....more pinchflat protection....and has comparable grip, even in wet....compound FEELS harder than the 24.1...but the grip feels the same to me...

casings wear out, especially on tires which are not made to higher standards (omg is that why some tires are sooooooo expensive?!?!?). if your try-all tire is old, it's going to pinch more because the poor bastard is all blowdideeed up.

ps- maxxis tires dont get gooey in hot weather because of the more expensive rubber compound. the different blends of oils and synthetic/natural rubbers that maxxis uses are more consistant in all kinds conditions. cheaper compounds react more to changing conditions.

Arent you just Mr. information, Kevin. You seem to always know all of this useless crap about everything, it makes me laugh for some reason.

Personally I'd stick with the 2.5 but that's just me. I ride natural 95% of the time and I think think that the wider tire gives me more confidence on all of the irregular surfaces. If you ride more urban then you should be fine with the 2.35, I just think that the maxxis 2.35 is a little on the narrow side. Another advantage is that it is a bit lighter. You'll love the 40a SRY compound if your used to the ST 42a.

if you have problems pinching the comp 24.1 you have issues.

how much do try all tyres weigh (front and rear - stock)?
my michelin comp 24 is getting bald so i am thinking of changing to try all tyres. Better grip then the comp 24?
cheers

better grip? well- softer rubber. i think the ride quality of the michelin casing is hard to beat. i dont want to say 'dont buy a try-all' so much as i want to say 'stick with what you know is awesome'

I don't have problems pinching them, I've just pinched before with them......still haven't pinched on these yet.....
Only crappy thing about them is they seem like a "dead" tire. Like, there's no bounce from it...AT ALL, and when you hit a ledge, it just absorbs, no rebound...it's really different feeling I'll tell you that....but it grips and won't snakebite...I think this' the last Intense tire I use for Trials cause of that awkward dead feeling....

go for maxxis if you dont like the dead feel of the michelins.

No...the Intense is Dead feeling...I like the bounce of the Michelins...LOL, shoulda worded that last post better...
But to put it into perspective, the Michelins seem bouncy compared to the Intense.....cause hopping on the rear is almost a chore cause it doesn't rebound at all really, it just seems like I get on the rear, and itjust absorbs, no rebound....like riding on a reall highly inflated tire...it's just there, no bounce....
