View Full Version : Bay Area riders-GROUP RIDE

after seeing a lot of videos and riding with a lot of people, i think it's time that all of the bay area riders got together on one huge group ride. it'd be a ride where there would be beginers through expert/pro's. i feel that it would be a learning experiance for the sport/begginner riders, and it would be still fun for the expert/pro riders.
who's down for something like this? when and where?

I might be down for a ride on Sunday. I'll be riding with Paul (as long as his internal bleeding has cleared up) tomorrow night at the SF group ride (same great time, same great place). I'll talk it up with him and see if we can come up with a place around San Francisco to ride some natural...

Maybe it would be worthwile to create some sort of incentive for showing up. It would be nice to have an informal comp like the CO guys have. I know sandhill has gone to shit since they droped trials and turned the obstacles into a DH/northshore thing. Maybe we could find somewhere else to just throw down some ribbon and have some fun?

hmmm, sandhill has a ton of obstacles. they are a bit big though, so unless your an accomplished sport rider it might be pretty tuff.
i agree though, informal comps would be pretty fun, we just need to find some place with a huge pile of rocks. i hear santacruz is pretty good...? i'm not sure as i can't drive (so i haven't gotten a chance to check some stuff out). if we do find anything, id definately be down for a comp!

I think people that posted above I believe are at least expert. I have no clue where to go. Santa Cruz or some where I've never been

Spots in Santa Cruz
Here's just a few...
UCSC: Urban and Natural terrain. Ledges, rails, granite rocks. Best bet is the quary just past the bookstore. Otherwise, just ride around and I'll guarantee that you'll find something. Something for all rider levels. Beware campus police as with any college.
Harbor: Rocks and big cement Jacks on the walkway out to the Lighthouse. Significant consequences (read: falling down holes between the rocks) and can be wet from crashing waves. More suited to expert riders with confidence. You can find it on maps simply as the Harbor.
"Log park": Small park with playground, picnic tables, rocks, and lots of "logs" made from old telephone poles. Something for everyone, but nothing that big, more technical than anything. Up the inlet from the harbor, ride the paved trail up from the harbor and go up the big wood staircase.
West Cliffs: Anywhere north of Cowell beach and Lighthouse Park. Big rock piles out on the cliffs. Huge moves, and technical moves. Pretty much experts only. Lots of risk from falling between the rocks. Can also be windy and misty from the waves crashing. It's my favorite place to ride.
De La Vega: Used to have the best log piles EVER. R.I.P. Haven't been there in a while, but I don't think there's anything left for trialsriders. Nice set of dirt jumps though. Western edge of the golf course, north side of the road, find the trail behind the cement wall thingy just at the top of the hill.

Only place that would really lend itself to a large group ride is Campus. Nowhere is very good for an informal comp.

I went for a trials ride out on west cliff last night (lighthouse field/west cliff, all by my lonesome).
I'm thinking west cliff ranks a good second to ucsc, for a group ride (I've ridden all the places you list, all good spots - too bad the dela logs are gone).
I was sure wishin there were some more riders out there last night!
I disagree with your statement west cliff is best for experts though, I think there's plenty of good stuff for beginners too.
If anybody's looking for another rider in Santa Cruz, let me know cause i'm ready.
(how's this forum stuff work, anyway? I could post I good westcliff photo if'ns I knew how)

i like darkside's idea of a informal comp. the last Comp i put on(Stick hop) had almost no expert riders because of gradutions, concussions and such. I'd be down to put on a informal comp, but would riders come out for it? what dates are good for people? would May 2 work for youguys? I know a spot in SF with beginner to elite level rocks that is pretty free of police harassement.

Ugh, May is a busy month. Casey and I are doing a demo on the 1st, but if the rocks are good enough I might come out.

I'll give this a try, thanks.
This photo is at lighthouse field (last June)
My bud K. Aptekarev took the photo.
nothin spectacular about the riding, but I thought the photo was pretty good (5 MP too!). (25 feet up the log, then gap to the lower branch)
When I rode there this week, I was riding down a few hundred feet and on the boulders and just below was a photo shoot of this goddess in a g-string. Damn. If that aint a good reason to be there then I don't know what.

I'd be down for an informal ride with some sections... Paul, where do you want to have it (waveorgan?) and what's up with not calling me about it? Where's the love gone?
