View Full Version : Why are the majority of trials riders complete dorks?

AndyT

Time to bring some spice...I've been in the game for a long time now (compared to most of the people on here) and I've met a lot of people. I'm keeping this as a stateside, as I don't believe we can make commentary on other cultures unless being part of that culture.

I've heard the reasons for why most trials riders are all huge dorks, but it still doesn't make sense. It's obvious that for anyone to put in a few years into trials they have to be patient and smart...but does that mean they have to be a complete douche? Is the "technicality" of our sport...I don't know.

I've met very few people that I ride who I would be interested in hanging out with, outside of bikes. I've probably met over a hundred riders, from all over the country in my last 4 years of riding.

I guess what brought this on was watching jeff lenosky's keepin' it real the other day and it gave me flashbacks to when I actually had a goal to ride for, and I loved riding- I would do it all day, every day. Now I'm hundreds of times better, and have no interest in touching a bike. I know there is tons that I would like to learn, but I have no reason to do so. I hate the scene, for the most part the people, for lack of a better word, are fucking :greddy: . I feel like JJ or dan drain, "he's an asshole"

I don't know that I would classify them as dorks Andrew, but a lot of the trials riders I know are just good hearted people. You are more of a partier and a guy that likes to live for the minute. I think the reason why the trials crowd appears dorky to you is that you are a completely different person than most other trials riders I've met. Nothing against you of course, thats just the person you are.

Yes I should've defined "dorks", I meant to leave that in my original posts however Most Extreme Elimination challege swayed my concentration.

Hahah, so true....but I think a better word for the type of people who proliferate trials riding is disemic aka socially dislexic. (yeah, I can't spell) Just imagine the word and you'll come up with a definition. I think the sport attracts this demographic because of it's uniqueness and relative lack of high risk. Combine this with the technical aspects of the sport and walaw, fucking douche bags.

Ease off of me fellas. Look how big of a dork I am, I love trials and computers so much that I thought it would be a good idea to make a bike-trials website. What can you do?

i am guessing most people are douches, because they seem to all come from cross country background, who are vicariously rodie flamers. there's also the vagina factor... most of them have never seen one, and or have one themselves. it's the same way in any group though, there are only a few people that aren't douchebags. i'd say only 10% of the world is cool enough to hang out with me anyway...

some people are just bitter.. then theres ANDREW. oh well...who really cares? i may be a dork, i may be a loser, whatever cliche you use is likely to be true. but i have fun, i enjoy the sport, and i like everybody that i have come to meet through trials. maybe some not to the point that id hang out with them, but i like them none the less, every body is nice, and thats all you can really ask for. Andrew fucking rules at riding, and i have huge respect for that. i cant see calling everybody a douche. but like i said before..waht do i know, im only 18. hope to ride soon. with a lot of people who also ride. see you next season andrew..HAHA

This a complex process .I try to immerse myself in the arts, sciences, booze, and vagina. It seems to be working . In my spare time I talk shit ,
and I ride like it too! I collect records and some times I collect dust on my dick....But not since I started riding trials.Ladies,ladies...ok one lady

I think I get along with most all trials riders because I do a lot of freeriding and there are some pretty douchey people in that aspect of riding. but cross country racers are by far the doucheyist douche's around. I am canadian ,i'm 17 and i know you are older so i guess i should respect my elders. Something wrong aboot the accents , eh.

You don't see me on biketrials.com- the majority of people on this site are from colorado, which is where I live...they are people I have relationships with in the real world. I still like to keep up to date as per whats going on...I ride a zebdi for an hour or two every day, I don't consider it trials but most normal people do. :dunno:

I take it that because you are asking why most trials riders are dorks that you happen to be a cool kid? Are you so godly that you get to tell yourself this? How did you come to this conclusion? What if I say you are a dork too? Does that mean you are? Or can I say I'm cool even though I might not be?

I remember having this same conversation in about grade 4.

Who are you to decide who should be labeled as what? Who is anyone to even give a crap about any of it?

If you don't ride trials why don't you go work on your abubacas or whatever trend you moved onto instead of living on here. I'm sure you talk to most people on here you say you wanna stay caught up with privately. I seriously just dont get WHY? How could you possibly care about any of this.

Now I didn't say who I thought was or wasn't cool. I was only wondering why even bother.

I was a trials rider, I don't think im  I just have a way different personality. And to me, most of the local people who ride trials are dorky- thats the only word I can think of. I can't go for a ride, and sit for 2 hours talking about what kind of cranks are coming out or how high of PSI kenny belaey is running in his rear tire. The scene in canada is way different than here- you have no clue what its like so you are in no position to talk.

I'm sure you talk to most people on here you say you wanna stay caught up with privately.

Only matt and dolphin, I never talk to the other riders...but I still want to know whats going on.

If you don't ride trials why don't you go work on your abubacas or whatever trend you moved onto instead of living on here.

hahaha living on here? I check this site a few times a day, to some that might be crazy- different mindsets I guess. I know people who spend over 10 hours on the computer a day, takign 15 minutes of that day to look at this site is hardly living on here. Maybe if you are slow with computers it might take you a while.

I seriously just dont get WHY? How could you possibly care about any of this.

Because I have nothing better to do? I like starting shit? I wanted to increase the flow to matts site? I'm an attention whore? This is what I do? The more people that post the better the forum does?

I guess you still aren't seeing my point. Why is it that you get to decide that someone is dorky because they talk about "what kind of cranks are coming out or how high of PSI kenny belaey is running in his rear tire?"

I really don't get it. Why can't you be considered the "dork" for not talking about that. It's all personal opinions. Why can't it be left at that.

And I mean please. It wouldn't take too long to go back to bt.com and dig up some old posts of yours from when you talked abouts anything koxx related like you could get off on what parts they were running and stuff. (the whole debate on wanting the front freewheel, your theory on how hubs with less engagement will give you more power) You've been there and done what you are talking about what is dorky. I guess I don't pay enough attention to get the point about all this.

"Because I have nothing better to do? I like starting shit? I wanted to increase the flow to matts site? I'm an attention whore? This is what I do? The more people that post the better the forum does?

I care to disagree. I come to trials forums to talk trials and trials only. Everything else has its own place elsewhere and I try to stay clear of places where the two gets mixed. It's why I'm not seen in the off topic room.

AndyT
11-07-2003, 05:19 PM
Note i said talking on a ride. If anyone rode with me they knew I would scorn at people talking, and often just ride away from group rides leaving them. On the internet is different, when I'm riding thats all I want to do.

This was one of the first topics made, its 3 pages long- I'd say I was successful at bringing people into talking about it. Forums succeed with high DRAMA, the more people post the better. Take everything I type with a grain of salt, its all lies for the most part...remember TEX or Andrew D. Tonkery? I just like finding reactions and seeing how people respond to different things, its entertaining for me.

Well, first of all I want people to realize that there is some history here.

Bubblenuts was registered as "this guy" on a forum I was a moderator at (biketrials.com) and was there for no other reason than to start trouble. We went round and round for about a month before he was banned, that is why he received no chances here.

unlearn was Bubblenuts' friend that was also a major PITA on the biketrials.com boards. He wasn't as bad however, and he has recently moved to my area. We've ridden together and because of us knowing each other personally and of the friendship that is sure to develop after riding together more, I am allowing him to post here.

Steve (unlearn): I wasn't shitting you when I said we were cool, but things can change quickly if you were to be a prick.

You can make fun of anyone unregistered in Off-topic (please realize Stephen Maeder is a registered member and a friend of mine), as long as you aren't being a postwhore. I like to keep the trials forums friendly, like the trials world basically. Some cussing here and there is fine (I do it too) but nothing sexually explicit. You'll find that if you're just a nice guy you'll get along fine here.

Dort sind keine Spiegel in Kanada?

There are no language dictionaries in the US? That is why online translation sites are not to be trusted.

Anyway, in Cleveland there are about 6 trials rides left and none of them are dorks.
However, I have noticed something disturbing though. what's up with the old school trials riders, ie., into it for more than 4 years, who can't come to terms with the new evolution in riding and bikes, like the Koxx, Coustellier, and the new Zoo, and Echo frames and the riding that those bikes allow. There are a lot of dudes who still think that trials is about rolling over roots and that back wheeling stuff is "fancy."

Somebody posted earlier that trials attracts dorks because of it's relatively low danger level. Well, that is only true if you are either a beginner or sport rider or if you are a pussy. At the higher levels it can be quite dangerous, just look here http://www.trialsworks.com/media/videos/clips/johnbail2.WMV if you don't believe me. That's about the same kind of damage you would do to your body if you missed a stair gap or something.

AndyT
11-13-2003, 02:38 PM
Planetary, I have fallen badly once in trials, ankle is still messed up over a year later...but it is still super low risk. The only reason that guy is hurt is because of parts, incorrect maintenance or just part failure- be it what may, that video is HILARIOUS!! You never see any really bad falls in trials videos, they just don't happen. There is no risk of death unless you are so high up that the fall will kill you. I can't see anyone braking their back or neck in trials, you just don't have enough impact speed. Once you start doing "tricks" etc at 20, 30 mph then you are completely hosed.

I hope you don't consider 4 years of riding oldschool :hs: Making me feel old- but I do see the guys with like GT mods who have ridden for about 8 years and DON'T KNOW HOW TO PEDAL KICK!! It's hilarious, those guys crack me up.

planetary1
11-13-2003, 03:11 PM
yeah, but give or take a few inches and his mouth would have impacted those pallets and then he would have been JACKED up...
Did you see Jib? Some of those dudes had crazy falls and I can't believe they walked away from them...but yeah, street is way more dangerous.

By old school I didn't really mean old or even bad, I'm sure I'm older than most trials riders out there even though I have been only riding for 2 and a half years...anyway, you can be FROM the old school as long as you don't stay there, take the knowledge and experience with you into the future.

Old-school is pre-'97 world round, after that, everything changed. Andy doesn't even know any old-schoolers besides me! This is the largest waste of a precious resource I've seen recently. Andy's posts are ridiculous and hateful but I gotta tell you, if you meet him you'll see he's kinda small and timid and a nice guy with loads of talent. I'm older than all of you and my opinion is that he'll turn out just fine. yes, unfortunately, we do have a few dorks in this sport but if you've only been around 4 years, then you still don't know who they are, thank god.

I have about 5 girls in a grade lower than me after me, and 2 super preppy girls in my grade level after me. I hate it. At least my girlfriend is hot...hahhah :rant2:

Yep, they're french, but I'm talkin about the Bumbellier brothers...the :eek3: y ride trick new Mongooses and suck big-time, but they're cool so I figured "What the hell". We're shootin for an extended trip starting with Teva and going thru Gunnison and Snowshoe and possibly a surprise the first week of July...stay tuned. Another colo. and ot.net exclusive! The Broncos won today so I may have had a few cervisas...if you know the Broncos, then you know this won't be a recurring problem :eek3: .

Bmx dont make u a dork, it does however probbaly make you mader than most trialers. Me mate does both very well and his style is heavily influenced by bmx. I think he is mad as he does massive wall rides on a trialer, and the thort of rideing stright at a wall an intending to land on it..........scares me slightly. :joshers:

If you ever come to australia you should come out with us dorks, well actually, its only me and a few others that get wasted most weekends when we arent working :D
But you may end up like a friend of mine who passed out and woke up with no hair, one less eyebrow, in a different house and different clothes on, he ended up meeting up with the local surfie thugs apparent "friends" of his....
Im with brett on the whole dork calling, maybe call them boring, cos you are probably a tool in their eyes, meh who cares. Most of my mates here are trials riders, but i have best mates who dont ride, and i go out with them most of the time. Scene may be a lil different over there.

Also you must be over 21 and there are a lot of younger riders there who dont know what goin out is..
Peace

Ease off of me fellas. Look how big of a dork I am, I love trials and computers so much that I thought it would be a good idea to make a bike-trials website. What can you do?

Hahahaha sounds like me...if it's raining, I'm inside playing counter-strike :P

I will back Peace on this one.. I read a lot of this and riders in Australia (I've met most riders around the country I think) are laid back and into the beer (like our country is renowned for) and just normal shit. Like riders are just normal people and you probably wouldn't be able to tell they do trials unless they had a bike.

AndrewT- maybe you need to come over here for a holiday someday? It could be very rewarding... plenty of girls, beer, smokes and oh yeah riding :P
