As for the comparison to Jeff and Ryan, it really doesn't apply.
Maybe Danny rides amazingly well but is terrible at promotion and doesn't want to travel around doing shows and thinking about business?
To think that someone is going to "take him in" and "sponsor him for life" is just silly. Nothing works like that, least of all in business.
Just appreciate the riding for what it is and don't conflate it with other, unrelated things.

Great video, but the comments these streety videos get are unusually daft. Is this riding style really more that much more progressive than others or is it just that it's trendier? Seems to me that these moves have largely been done before in bmx. Not to say there aren't some new tweeks to be tried and maybe even some totally new things out there in the future, but "riding progress" is really more cultural than the causal video viewer realizes. So, trying to compare riders with different styles is nothing more than a statement of personal preference, which if you're lucky isn't tied to the trends.

Why do people want to limit themselves to "He'd smash if he were on a BMX!" Who gives a fuck? Lets make all the BMX riders ride MTBs that they don't want to ride. You don't push boundaries and make up new shit by doing the same shit everybody else is doing.
The reason he IS gnar is because he's not like every other guy..........on a bmx. "Lets see Reuben on a 24...." well, he's not, and he's not "willingly" on one so no, that doesn't make him any better, it makes him another BMX rider who could probably be good on a 24 (or anything you throw him on), but isn't on one, so it doesn't matter.
It's originality. And HUGE props for him doing what he does and not categorizing and limiting himself as a _______ rider, and doing it at the level he is. Like said, he's standing out on his own....and is fucking gnar.
So fun to watch, smooth and the transition one after another is jaw dropping.

This riding is quite a bit slower and relies on brakes and wheel lock more than most bmx.
This is the direction bmx street is going IMO, more tech and body movement mixed with flatland type links, less launching. They are going to have to hustle to catch up to Danny Mac though.
I have been telling the flatland guy I ride with in the show that he should try disc brakes. Bmx bikes are funny how behind the parts are. It limits the progression for certain tech moves I think. It would be nearly impossible to bunnyhop to front wheel on a rail with bmx brakes. Again, they need to catch up.
Danny is making the most of his equipment for sure. Seems like trials to me, but it doesn't really matter what you call it. Just bike riding?

Have you tried a well set up u-brake on a chrome rim? As strong as any trials brake I've used (especially with plaz v pads)- just pants in the wet. Discs wouldn't really work on bmx as they would just get trashed by grinding. BMXer's tend not to be very careful with the upkeep of their bikes either...
Juhan
09-29-2008, 12:40 PM
Have you tried a well set up u-brake on a chrome rim?
Nope, in my 4 or so years of riding trials and in the 16 or so years that I've been riding bikes in general I've yet to try a decently set up U-brake. I'm not saying they don't exist, but I've yet to see any.
LanceT
09-29-2008, 01:28 PM
I think u-brakes have a similar tendency to any rim brake, either they are really grabby or they modulate, not too much of both.
discs lock pretty well and modulate, which is what makes street trials riding like Danny Mac possible I think.
I thought discs would be good for flatland as they are not going to smash them on anything. Maybe scuffing would be an issue though, not sure.
Trials really pushes the limits and progression of not just riding, but the parts as well.

09-29-2008, 01:58 PM
Great rider, no doubt, but this is moving way away from being "trials."
Not really digging the 360's. They just look too forced. The nose manuals, 180s, foot-jam whips, etc were pretty smooth though.
If this is what he can do in 2 hours, I'd love to see what they could do with just a little more footage.

This vid is a perfect example of how good a rider he really is. He didn't have HOURS upon hours to pluck only the best stuff. Pretty gnar.
Discs on Flatland would suck. I rode flatland for 2 years, and anything that gets in the way pisses you off. They complain about forks not being sharp or thin enough at the axle, I can only imagine the horseshit they would come up with for a disc and caliper being in the way. It's part of the reason many riders are going brakeless aside from the typical "smoothness" response.
Lance is right about U Brakes. They suck. The only ones worth a shit are the CNC ones like Fly and the new Propers cause they're STIFF. They're only used because like everything else in BMX, they don't get in the way. Even with a chrome rim, they just suck less. It's no wonder BMXers go brakeless when all the brakes available for thier frames suck.

kevin- i just put a fly brake on my bike and it works pretty fucking well. it was a bitch to set up but i kind of think that's the way it is with bmx parts- spend a jillion hours setting up the first time, then dont touch for a year or two. my bike wasnt clearing the trp very well for the chainstay mounted brakes. chain rub and serious bone rattle sound from chain smack. fly brake is just as stiff and smooth for now as the trp and silenced my bike.
are specialized bmx's still coming with the trp stuff? no one seems to have any idea that brake exists and it totally kicks ass for being so cheap.

Dry and clean. When was the last time you've ever seen a chrome BMX wheel with no dust or anything on it? They work great when clean, but ANYTHING on the rim makes those things blow. I haven't used a trp, but 990s, hombres, tektros, and any other diatech ubrake I've used all suck (comparatively), even with awesome pads on a chrome rim. Flys and other CNCd brakes were good, but still...meh.
Even if the rim is sparkly clean and it locks perfectly fine, I wouldn't trust it near as much as I do the brake on the trials rig. I had Oddysey M2 levers, cables, housing, GTXR gyro and Fly brakes. Lever feel no shit felt like hydro's. Fucking smooth, fast return, solid, and you didn't feel the typical cable "feel" or stretch when locked. It was THE BEST feeling cable set-up I've ever used (even compared to old school Avids with XTR cables and levers) and had ZERO maintenance. Locked like a son of bitch when clean and never fucked with my ankle (out of the way). I still didn't trust them like I do a Hope, HS33s or Vees with good pads.

With all this talk of is he BMX or trials, what is better, blah blah blah, it makes me think that Danny Mac is kind of old school in that he is just doing crazy stuff on a bike regardless on genre.
His riding should inspire anyone to be creative on their bike whether it be BMX, trials, Urban MTB, slopestyle, whatever.

Some crazy riding in that. But i'd have to agree that the more trials influenced side of street is cooler than than the bmx side of it.
This may be a dumb question... but do dudes like this just ride full time and live off sponsor money or something?
Like, to get that good, you've got to ride a LOT! There's no way these kind of guys can be working full-time. But the whole lack of publicity and all makes me wonder just how much money sponsors can afford to throw at trials riders?
Maybe they're all just rich daddy's boys :dunno:
And as for U-brakes on bmx's. Every U-brake i've looked at has struck me as being a fundamentally crap design due to the terrible use of mechanical advantage. Unless they've come a long way since i last jumped on someone's bmx was and had to use 3 fingers to stop. Compared to the simple, yet effective design of V-brakes, U-brakes are a terrible design.

Don't know him myself but I have heard that Danny has actually being making money recently doing demos and shows in schools.
Very few riders live of sponsors. They normally combine sponsorship with competitions, doing demos and in many cases working part time. Demos can be a legitimate income stream for someone who works hard at it.
In terms of a full time job if most of us put in the same amount of time riding as we did posting on forums we would probably be a whole lot better anyway. :)
