alright so i just tried grinding a rim on an old kids bike i had.
i was using a blade that said "cut off blade" 4 1/2 " on it
it was the thinest one i had and i tried all different agles (90, 45, 15) something like that, and it turned out pretty wavey and smooth
it wasnt rough at all like i have seen pictures of
what blades do you all use and what agle
thanks

You need to use a metal grinding disc, not a cutting blade. Something like this:

or

http://www.amazon.com/DEWALT-DW4523-General-Purpose-Grinding/dp/B00004RH8I/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1217625094&sr=1-3

You can probably find them at any local hardware store for a couple bucks. I use one that was $1.50 and it has lasted for 3 grinds so far.
When grinding, lightly hold it at an angle to the rim so that you are using the sharp edge of the disc. Try not to apply pressure or you'll eat through the rim.
AndyT posted a how-to vid on here, probably in the media section. Check it out.
There's a bunch of info on grinding, just do a search.

I had really good luck with a metal cut-off wheel and they're much cheaper... It has to be brand new though.

yeah this one was brand new but it didnt turn out too good
what about using a metal saw
i know it takes longer but i have that but not a car to get a blade at the local hardware store

cut-off wheels work well, so do the thicker grinding discs. how fast/slowly were you moving the grinder? if you do it slowly, it will be smooth

no i was doing it pretty quick i think
my dad set the speed and i played around wiht it after and did it really fast
what about like taking an exacto knife and like slashing the rims.
i heard this from a local trials biker today and he said it worked well

Yeah, I've tried that and it works like a grind. I used a box cutter though. Much better than an exacto.

You guys seriously have used a cutting disc and it worked? Maybe I'm thinking of something different.
