I am looking to replace a stock hub on an 08' Giant STP 2. Obviously looking at the Chris King, and the Hope pro trials 2. However, I would like to run 8/9 gears. So it looks like the only proven hub is the Chris King that I know of since the Hope only allows a 6sp cassette. I just was looking at the Hadley rear hubs which claim up to 108 engagement points. Has anyone used one? Or have any suggestions for a cheaper solution than Chris King?

Thanks,

a local rider here uses the Hadley and loves it! hes not exactly smooth and it seems to never skip or unnoticeable if it does. Definately an option, although id stil go the King, Bolt thru and steel driveshell makes it a winner, the price is ok given that they seem to last soo well, my last one was 8yrs old and stil going with new owner.

anyways hope that helps a bit..

Im pretty sure in the past, I've read somewhere about the Hadley isnt the greatest hub if you're gonna be be using it for trials (but dont quote me on that.. just rings a bell)despite the higher number of engagements.

For the money, i personally think you should go with the King, which cost less and are proven excellent in terms of quality, reliability and performance.

Heard Hadley went down to 72 pts. If they'd launch a damn website, we wouldn't have to guess at this stuff.

Thats what I though aswell you can get used 108 pts although they are hard to find (well atleast in australia) but they still use the ratchet system.
Chris King hubs use the ringdrive which is a better system imo.

If you really feel that you need that many gears, King, but if you can get away with 6, the Hope is amazing, and at an amazing price. My Hope hasn't skipped in 2 years, super awesome hub.

I agree, if you're just starting out and haven't been spoiled with a King in the past, the hope would be my choice. You wont notice the number of engagement points when riding. Thats a lot of money in your pocket over a King.

I had a skip in my hope for a couple rides about once per ride, but it seems to have gone away. They also sent me the wrong color but who cares :Sonic:

Where do I find a 6 speed cassette for a hope if I were to go that route?

Mash up a bunch of cogs :dunno:

Just take apart an old cassette or two and make your own.

some shimano 8speed road cassettes are held together by m3 bolts, so they're easy to customize. Most current 9 speed road and mountain have a cluster of 5 or 6 gears that are pinned together or to a sprocket carrier, plus a few single cogs. For example, my current 9 speed road cassette has a one-piece cluster with 17-19-21-23-25 tooth cogs. So when I drop a few of the smaller cogs, I have a 6 speed cassette that goes 13-17-19-21-23-25. (btw, 24-21 is my trials gear, so it's right in the middle of the gear range).

I love my Hadley hubs. I have the 108 point engagement hub and have had zero problems. I have had it on a DH bike as well as a DJ/Urban/Trials bike. Perfect, almost instantaneous, engagement. They stopped making them because some people were having problems with the internals. Their 72 point ones are even more durable. I have heard good things about the hope and profile hubs as well.

So the hope will accommodate both 8 and 9 sp spacing? Is the spacing the same between 8 and 9 speed?
Has anyone used a DMR Revolver 6 prawl hub? OR heard of any good bad things about the DMR hubs?

I am also curious also whether or not the Hope 6 gear cassette carrier would allow 6 8 speed spaced gears as well as 6 9 speed spaced gears. Perhaps tart or one of the other Hope knowledgeable peeps will chime in. 5x4.3 versus 5x4.8 , so a difference of roughly 2.5 mm between the 8 and 9 speed requirements.?

Btw, by the time you shell out for a Hadley, king isnt much more.

i believe the hope is meant to be a 6spd with 8 speed spacing. I've got one myself and it's great, had it about 2 years now i think...hasn't skipped, bearings are still smoother than half of the stuff thats new. as for gearing, don't use an 9 spd cassette, the spacing is narrower so you'll likely have to use a 9 spd specific chain, which will be weaker and more expensive
