just read this thread http://www.observedtrials.net/vb/showthread.php?t=33495&highlight=710

seems to be alot of people for and against........does anyone have any actual proof that using the quicklinks results in quicker chain snappage?

Also, whats better for a mod running 18/12 FFW drivetrain, the 710, 810 or 910 version?

K710 is your best bet as its a 1/18 chain not a 3/32 :p

910 is ridiculous. Either the 710 or the 810 should be just fine.

It says "Stretch Proof" is it?, my last KMC 810 was pretty stretched.

No chain is stretch proof. The 710/810 don't stretch too badly compared to most, especially if you compare it to say a KMC Z chain or something of the sort.

It takes 2 minutes to use a regular link and crimp the end of the pin a little with a center punch or even a pair of pliers so the pin end has a lil fold over so the plate wont pop off... go this route FTW

K810 works fine for me. I haven't seen it stretch last time I measured.

Never had an issue with split links (or half links for that matter, though I know people have, and understand why) and I'd certainly say run it, though Trauma's method works too

The reason the chains fail when people don't use the split link is generaly as they come apart where the 'mushroom' has been killed by breaking/joining

ok, so whats peoples opinion between width

710 (1/8)

or

810 (3/32)

?

go for the wider one, 710. there is ample pin sticking out over the plates AND they're mushroomed. combination means that it's pretty much impossible to snap the chain at a pin unless you're entirely useless with a chain tool and/or run the chain for years and years until it completely wears out. i've never broken a 710 but i've broken an 810.

also, i go through Z-chains, any sram chain in <10 rides. for someone like me i think a quicklink is death, they're far weaker than the actual chains.

i ran the 910 for a while. fucking  chain. i think it weighed more than my frame. after i put it on my frame i couldn't get it off because i couldn't find a chain tool big enough to remove it.

if they break you can fix them with zip-ties!! worked for me...would you ride it?

:noes: how long have you been riding with the ziptie?

NO.

This from someone with the same KMC chain , in fact 2 different KMC chains put together, for over 3 years- on over 3 different chainring/cog sets...never an issue...with the link....break in one ride.

You put it in facing the wrong direction anyways :momaru:

With regards the 810 (3/32") vs. 710 (1/8"), I've taken to always using the 810 since it has the same strength characteristics as the wider chain but weighs less. On the 710 you're just getting longer pins (which in my mind is a bad thing stress-wise) and longer rollers, both of which add to the weight without having any effect on strength. If anything it's more likely to cause problems. But yeah, I've used exclusively 810's for a good few years now and never snapped one. Change them roughly every 6 months as a precaution but won't be going elsewhere anytime soon.

I like your thinking.

With the above picture with the ziptie, wtf?.....how is the tooth from the sprockets going into the chain if the ziptie is in the way?

This happened at the raccoon rally event this year...so however long that has been.

You put it in facing the wrong direction anyways :momaru:

There's a right direction?

how is the tooth from the sprockets going into the chain if the ziptie is in the way?

I guess I have the wider chain cause it passes through with no problems. :D ohh also if you look there are wide links and narrow links and the quicklink is one of the wider ones

There's a right direction?

Yes. The way you put it in the lock thingy can get stuck on the chainring/ sprocket/derailleur/tensioner etc and push itself out.
Happened to me once. Didn't pay attention and put it in the wrong direction, it got stuck on the chain tensioner. The chain unrolled while i was on the backwheel. I went over the bars when i tried to gap.
The funny part was that i heard a strange noise while i was on the backwheel, setting up the gap. It was only after i went over the bars when i realized that the sound i heard was the chain completely unrolling from the drivetrain. The chain wasn't even on my bike anymore when i tried to gap

that zip thing looks safe....
btw, does the narrower chain fit the wider cogs? I remember i had one kool chain and it didn't fit my cog.

I agree with this. Best chain I have used, even with the quicklink. Also comes in a few colours.
