i recently bought an 02 echo es2 frame off a friend. he had a king headset on it, which he kept but swapped it out for a woodman headset. i'm pretty sure it's a jupiter. unfortunately i can't get the thing tight without it binding up. what i mean by that is, the only way that i can get rid of the play in the headset is to tighten it so much it barely moves. iv disassembled it and the grease looks clean. an suggestions? i know these headsets are supposed to be bombproof so i cant imagine it's broken.
thanks

Do you have the correct race on the fork?

Maybe you assembled the parts incorrectly or upside down.

Or maybe it's lame...
If it's a sealed cartrige headset and it's binding.... check to be sure that the top bearing cover isn't binding up against the top headset cup... If it is..you can fix it by getting a near paper thin spacer at the local bike shop and putting it between the top bearing and the top bearing cover....
I've had this happen a few times with VIZ headsets...awesome headsets..but lame with the binding issue. The woodman are probably the same, though I've not seen them in person.

Sounds to me like the headtube is ovalized.
Is your steerer tube on your fork long enough?

yes i'm positive. the race is unmistakable

i can't think of a different way to assemble them as the top and bottom bearings aren't interchangable so i think i'm good here too.

it sounds like this could be the issue. the top cover doesn't seem to have enough room between it and the cup pressed into the frame. when turn the bars, there's a slight grinding sound, like metal on metal. thanks

not likely. the previous owner is a good mechanic and takes care of his bikes. plus he had a king in there before and i doubt he ever left it loose.

it was actually too long when i got it and i had to add a spacer.
ps. I love that book.
which book is that?

Is the head tube faced???? Some headsets require a good faced surface because they have such a tight tollerance. This can play a big factor when it comes to sealed headsets.
Go to a good bike shop and get it done, if it hasn't been done yet. Many people forget to do this.

i wouldn't know if it was faced or not since i didn't install it. ill take it to the lbs tomorrow and see what they say. i did add a spacer made out of guitar string to the top cover and it helped a lot though.
