I'm running a Hope Mono Trial Disc Brake front. It's only a few days from comp and my brakes have shit themselves. I've read some other threads on these doing the exact same thing. Locking up and not moving. My problem is I'm not much good with fixing brakes. I need to know a simple way someone else may have overcame this problem. Any help would be great, its locked up to a point where riding is a task down a hill.

either you need to bleed them, or you bled them with the wrong fluid. perhaps try lubing the cylindes first. im a pro at these brakes now....

Try the hope website, they have video on how to sevice their brakes, I'm getting ready to bleed mine for the first time and it looks like it should be dead simple.

I've bled them twice since I've had them. Not for this reason. They make an ear piecing scream as well. Tried all kinds of decontamination too. I've come to the conclusion that Hope brakes aren't real reliable.

what's the problem again? sticking and won't release?

ear piercing is not avoidable, mine does that

My wheel refuses to even spin. I HAVE used the correct fluid as said by Hope. I HAVE tried re bleeding. Only thing I havent tried is new pads. That doesnt seem to be the problem though. It also seems to get worse with use. If you DO manage to ride on it and use the brakes it will get worse.

Are your rims true?

Rim and disc are both true. The disc rubs the same amount the whole way around the disc. It's not wheel or disc problems. Its the brake itself.

It just seems some people get lucky with hopes and some don't. Like Chris King hubs. Some are crap some are good. So far I've had no problems with my Hope.

Was the Hope disc perfectly in between the caliper when you first installed it? Little off and the rotor can get warped & with the automatic pads adjustment, pads will start to rub against the rotor and worst case scenario the brake could lock up/have inconsistent braking pattern.

I've noticed this one day when I switched to a different front wheel & the disc was about 1mm off center. The brake would squeal and rub as if the rotor was bent. Popped in a thin washer that came with the caliper & fixed the problem right away. (another reason why Hope gives you 20 billion washers with the brake)

You can always contact the place you bought it from or talk directly to Hope (Texas) 936-756-5004 and see if they can warranty it if it's really the brake itself. Very nice folks & always helpful.

My mates Hope's stick on when they're warm, he just winds the adjusters off a little bit?

are both pads tight again'st the rotor or just one....

the screaching is because there is contamination on the pads/rotor sometimes if you're lucky you can clean rotor with alcohol and a clean dishtowl and put in new pads and it will be ok...other times you'll need new rotor and new pads....

if you run the levers such that they engage closer tot he bar it helps muscle fatigue immensly and may aleviate some of the lame-ness with locking up all the time. Your rear may also be a problem because the rotor might be hitting the bridge of the brake caliper ... especially if the caliper is low and the rotor has slid on the bolts....

Disc brakes: you need patience and you must be meticulous...NEVER ALLOW ANYTHING Alive or oily TO TOUCH THAT ROTOR.... I am constantly having to tighten my spokes too to get the right feel... But once you got all that they are amazing...wet, dry, hot, cold....there's always modulation and lock.... I'm hooked.

are you talking about the old c2 levers? i doubt this will help anyone with newer brakes.

sounds like you need to have some seals replaced. my brake started acting up this year- new seals and it works like new again.

how old is your brake?

The brake is about 6 months old. Before anyone says it again. I've done all alcohol decontamination on the disc and pads. I took the bike out yesterday. Forced it to ride around and they slowly unstuck. Then they started screaming again, then locked again now they're screaming again. Im going to rip my hair out.

Seems to me that all Hope products are supper great with the excepion of the trial brakes, sabatoge perhaps?

No idea, But I have heard of other people having tons of trouble with them. I run Avid BB7s on my XC, so im thinking I should get a set of Juicys for my Trials bike. Heavy but more reliable.

Nothing wrong with BB7s for trials.

Mine lost power after about 6 months. So i rebuilt the caliper and master cylinder (really easy to do) and now it works better than when it was new.

Yeah the BB7's on my XC are an awesome brake. And really easy to rebuild and adjust. Unlike the Hope Mono trials. Which are just a pain....

Are you re-setting the pistons before you bleed them or top off the fluid? Pull the pads out, use a pliers with a nice rubber handle and press the pistons back in. Top off the fluid, put the pads back in, make sure the rotor is centered in the caliper and squeeze the lever until the pads re-set.

Not sure if you've tried this yet, but it works for many brakes. I will argue the Hope brakes are some of the best out there. If serviced and set up correctly, they should work very well.

BB7s have more power than Juicys. I don't see how you figure the Juicys are more reliable.

when the brakes are locked does the lever still pull like normal? or is it locked too?

Lurker
07-10-2008, 09:05 PM
No the lever doesn't lock up. Feels exactly the same

Is your brake rotor touching the top of the caliper bridge?....

Like is the wheel locking up because the brake pads are rubbing or because the rotor is physically hitting the caliper bridge..?
