View Full Version : Rear Hub Clicking

So I was messing around the other day and heard a snap or crunching sound from my rear hub so I stopped and looked at it but didn't see anything. I spun the cranks and everything seemed fine but then I got back on and my hub made a clicking sound. The local bike shop was closed so I'm posting here on thoughts of what is wrong.
I've been visiting this site for a few months now but never have had anything to post about until now.
[edit] I also wasn't too sure where to post this and figured the beginner's area was appropriate as I am a beginner...

if its working, ride it, if its skipping or anything weird, time for a new hub. most hubs arent made for trials abuse, search around, something cheap like an lx silent hub or something else in that range should work for a beg.
what type of hub is it?

It's a Shimano hub, not sure which one (in small letters it says FH-M470 under it). The problem is though when I spin the cranks backwards the wheel spins backwards.

recommended action= bike shop.
the mechanic tell you the problem/solution in 10 seconds vs the debacle of us trying to solve it over a few days/years.

Problem: you have seized you internals.
Solution 1: Pull the whole hub apart and clean everything out and see if you can find the problem.
Better Solution: Get a new hub that is more able to stand up to trials. Single speed hubs with thread on freewheels are quite popular as they are inexpensive and if your freehweel blows up its like 30 bucks for an ACS one.
There u go man my 2 cents

Something is fucked inside your hub. More likely cracked. Get a new one.

It's a junk Shimano hub.
Bike shop should (if they know what they're doing) sell you a freehub body, which is held on the hub with one fat hollow bolt, 5 minute fix for about $25.

^^^ should have spares from throw-aways
The shimano on my commuter developed a tight spot in the freehub rotation, new freehub body fixed it, going on 1 year

Yea it was the freehub body... got it fixed and looking for a stronger hub. Maybe save up and buy a king hub.
