So I've had these two bikes for a while, not really riding either one that much. I've had the echo for 4 years, yet it looks like its been ridden a few months. I've had the NS Suburban for less than a year, and is in even better shape. I'm in the need of some money now and thought I'd trim down the fat a little. I've seen those streety/trials bikes around and thought that might be a good medium, because I rarely even go to the dirt jumps that are in LA (see: never), but still would like to go ride urban shit at UCLA. I guess I'm thinking of a single speed trials bike, with more of a street style. Would combining these two be completely retarded? I have a PX jackflash laying around, which might be a better frame for the street/trials aspect. I'm thinking rigid fork, dual disc, etc etc. My chris king wheel isn't disc, so I'd have to rock the DT440 thats on the NS, which isn't that trialsy. ehhhhhhhhhhhhh. I just don't have the time to ride both of these to their potential. opinions? suggestions?

I think that you should sell both of those as complete bikes and buy something used but new and exiting and pocket the change. more of a hassle but also more fun?

The Jack Flash won't really feel more trialsy than the Suburban frame with rigid fork.

If your not going to do any dirt jumping than I'd say keep the Control and put the street tires and seat on it, then try some high rise, narrow handlebars. The geometry of the short Control really isn't that different from some of the techy street bikes out there anyway.

Also, there is no reason to run rear disc if your rim isn't ground, plus you can take the brake booster off to make it a little less grabby. If it's really an issue for you, try running V-adaptors and V brakes to fine tune modulation.

THEN RIDE THE BIKE. Okay?

I spent a summer on a jack flash with NO FUCKING BRAKES (this was in 2001, before the hype) and a busted ghetto manitou fork and had some of the most fun of my life on that thing...

would always prefer dedicated rigs for each but. . .

I had an 04 evolve that I built with a few interchangable parts (in 06)that was dece for both. If you knew an hour in advance what kind of riding you felt like then you could swap a few parts and have either a decent Dj bike or street trials. Short travel dj fork with dedicated wheel/caliper/disc etc to replace cromo rigid fork and trials front wheel, 32 tooth ring to replace bash over 22t, bike stays pretty light, definetly jumpable and street trialsable with some work. Definetly need 2 identical lower headset races for the forks.

Dirtjumpers will be wtf about the maguras, but they will be fine. Un-ridable on rocks? mostly. at least by me.lol Can be decent trail SS also. . .

Rigid DJ?

Definetly do able, if your reasonably smooth. Case a landing and you'll wish yuo had suspension. Want to definetly run a cromo fork though, and preferably kinda long. 420 mm Planet X would be good. Wouldn't do it with the rigid fork shown above.

so I have a dt swiss 440 rear QR hub on the Suburban, but its a pain in my ass to have it quick release. I'd much rather have a bolt on.
Would it be worth it to get the 10mm thru bolt adapter kit, and the 10mm thru bolt? I'd rather not have to flip the entire wheel just to get some bolt on axles. The entire deal would be about 65 bucks for the adapter/axle.

Right now, the rear end feels all flexy and shit like with the quick release, which I have to run with chain tensioners. With a disc brake, its annoying as fuck.

If it's a hollow steel axle then you can tap it to M6X1 without any drilling, and run an M6 bolt on setup (takes a 5mm hex key). Just need to buy some bolts with the washers built in. i think DMR sells them seperately for a few dollars. won't be quite as stiff as that 10mm but not far off.

so I guess to put an end to this thread, I decided to basically keep both bikes how they are, just changing parts here and there to make them a little more comfortable. The only reason I don't ride the NS is because the bars are too short, so I'm getting some fat wide ones so I'll ride it again, aha.
I also have a bike rack (old italian rack from 1982) for my car, so now I can actually go places and shit..thanks guyys.

I'd sell the Echo and keep the NS Suburban to do Urban riding and stuff. You can still used the NS Suburban for trialsy things, so it's a two-fer-one.

Trials that NS frame. Go the route that I did with my Dobermann. Throw a really short travel and stiff fork on it. (I'm running 72mm and pretty stiff) I can jump, urban, park, trials, 4X, DS....... just about everything on the bike. I'm running dual 7" BB7s and they have more than enough power and modulation.

Lol thats what I did, but you are so limited on a street bike.
I used to have an 06 dobermann pinscher.

What do you mean that you are limited?? Right now I am running SS as well. It has worked well so far but I may run it 1X5 or so that it is even more versatile and race friendly. It's amazing how many trials-y moves you can do with just a gear ratio of ~2:1.

whats your gearing?

26-12 right now because I have been riding the local BMX track and MTX course (practicing for some upcoming races). I had 26-13 for a while and it was great for just about everything. I also ran 26-14 for a short while. Good for doing trials moves and all around urban riding. Good enough for most jumps as long as things flow well as the gear can be spun out pretty easily. I am running 180 cranks as well so that might make a little bit of a difference and make the 26-12 gear seem easier than it is.

Hahaha. Thats still a good looking bike. I consolidated a couple of my bikes to build a few of my dream bikes. The Pinscher got the wheels from my old Versus Blitz (Funn 36X26 with Hadley 108 point engagement rear, 20mm front), cranks from the NS Suburban (Traded my Simtra for it, sold the frame to HHS) and then bought everything else new with money from parting out the Blitz. The saddle is going and the post will be replaced by a Thomson. That was all my shop had at the time. It really is a do it all bike. The guys at Dobermann really hooked me up.
