so, the other day while riding my bike, my rear brake decided to lock up completely. i have a hope mono trial brake. i re-bled it, and it did the exact same thing. i had hope send me a new set of seals thinking maybe they have just swollen for some reason. just put them on, re-bled it again, and it still locks up and wont release. its like the pistons forgot how to retract or something. anyone have any ideas on what to do? thanks-
btw, i use dot 5 brake fluid

How old are they? This isn't the first time I've heard of this... but I don't haven't heard of any solutions...

ask jda about this. He's gotten around this numerous times.

with rim brakes?
check your pads and rotor. make sure that there isnt anything snagging on them. i've had a chipped rotor not want to let go of the pads before.

Burn it and buy an Avid.... Problem solved ;)
I had LOADS of issues with my Hope Mono-Trial.... On Avid for 18 months, haven't touched it
Probably sticky pistons like how Magura does sometimes but that's only my assumption. I'm assuming the lever retracts without a problem?

nononnonono- he asked for a fix and i said "with rim brakes" as if that were the solution he would be looking for even though i knew it wasnt.

Okay. I'm not 100% sure how the hope system works but just looking at some of the caliper drawings there is no significant return spring on any of them. That means the lever not only presses the pistons out (to stop) but pulls them back in (to go).
Does your lever still pull in as if nothing had happened? or is it locked up like the pads have run out of room to move? or does it get harder to pull but will still pull?

If iam correct the seals themselves pull the pistons back just a couple of millimeters on either side to give the clearence. At least thats how it works on a motorcycle. So I would check to see if the seals were put in correct.:Wavey:

Dot 5 fluid is not compatible with 3, 4, or 5.1. 3,4, and 5.1 are glycol based while 5 is silicon based. Using Dot 5 in a system designed for the other type of fluid will cause the seals to swell and then your brake to lock up...
If anyone knows of a company such as Autozone or somewhere I could go to in-town that stocks 5.1 I would like to know about it. I have never found anywhere but mail order.
The way I fix this common problem with my mono trial is to first remove the pads. Then get some silicon lubricant spray with the small hose fitted to the pressure can. Then spray very generously down the sides of the pistons on both sides. Then pull the lever a bit to make the pistons come out BUT NOT TOO FAR, then clean all the dirt and crap off the sides of the pistons. Spray a bit more silicon spray on them then I use an old cone spanner to push the pistons back in again then repeat the process again. Should be good after that for at least a couple of months. :wtc:
Otherwise bin it and buy an Avid, thats what I'm doing soon.
