View Full Version : pinch flats

I have been getting a ton of pinch flats lately and I am not sure why. I started out by getting bigger/thicker tubes (using 26 x 2.75 downhill tubes), then I gradually started upping my psi in hopes that it would help keep the tubes from folding over. I still got flats pretty much every ride on stuff that doesn't look all too bad. I then checked myself, and got a friend to check for any problems with the rim/tread. Still nothing.

I always ride with a friend of mine who does the same lines as me with pretty much the same set-up as me, and he never seems to get flats. Am I missing something, messing up with my riding somehow, or is it just a TON of bad luck?

Thanks

~Dan~

there are definitely more pinch-flat resistant tires, but the michelin isn't awful. i've found the 2 ply maxxis tires to be very flat resistant, you might wanna try one of those. what pressure are you running also? going higher will help, but being smooth is also huge (not hitting your rim etc)

Ya, i have been thinking of getting new tread for a while. I didn't think that tires alone would make me flat this much though (I figured something else must be wrong).
I like to think that i am relatively smooth. I never seem to be smashing anything really all too hard, but as soon as I either get my rear tire near the edge or an object during a sudehop/pedal-up, or land on something that is the slightest bit sharper than sidewalk, I pinch.

I'm kind of torn between believed that my tires suck, my riding sucks, or a combination of the 2

depending on how old the tire is can affect it. my maxxis 2 ply was awesome but after a year on it the sidewalls got weaker and were more prone to flat.....

try a 2.5 mobster (I'm using one for my rear)...if you could find a 2.35 much better, much lighter...look for double wall sidings...if you can't find a mobster, look for maxxis hansventure 2.35 or IRC Kujo 2.35 2ply

I see a lot of people running maxxis'. A friend of mine is ordering some tryalls for himself, I was thinking of just ordering another set for me to save some hassle. Would that be addiquit, or are maxxis' worth getting separately?

Second that. I run a 2.5 mobster, and I have never had a flat.

reading the reviews on those, and it seems like they are unpinchable. At the same time, a lot of people are saying that tryall's pinch a lot. I just might order a mobster. Thanks every1

Ive been getting a lot of flats too recently but Ive also noticed that pieces of my tire of falling of and the walls are worn down in many places. Maybe your friend will let you swap tires with him for a ride and see if it keeps happening?

Have you tried dusting the tube & the inside of the tyre with talc?

No, never heard of doing that b4. How does it work?It seems to let the tube slide against the tyre instead of sticking to it & getting pinched. I used talc in the stock Kenda tyres I got with my old Faith & I stopped getting so many pinch flats.

try also putting/applying some powder or flour to your tubes before you fit it inside your tires :)

I think your tube is too wide also on top of the thin sidewall tire. I never had much luck with DH tubes. I run el cheapo $3 tube from Walmart.

I think I may have found the problem. I pinched twice yesterday, then looked over my rim again, and found out that my rim tape is just a really thin layer of hockey tape. The holes in my tube look like the perfect fit for the drilled out portions of my rim. I will try some real rim tape and see how that does.
