I'm fed up with breaking front axles! I need a new hub anyway, so what is better: A solid front axle or the typical QR? What would you get and why? I'm on a budget so I was looking at a Surly which can have either a solid or QR axle or axle for 62$ or (another) Shitmano XT M756 Front Disc Hub (http://webcyclery.com/product.php?productid=17701&cat=337&page=1) for $44. I also thought about the Echo Front Disc Hub which has a 15mm axle, but I don't know If your supposed to drill out your forks or what to fit that. Does anyone have any experience with that?

What would you experienced people do for a front hub (32 hole- six bolt disc) under $100?

How are you breaking front axles?!

Anyway. Don't bother with Shimano hubs. They're heavy and use cheap bearings.

I'd go with a Hope Pro 2 or any trials branded hub. There's not a whole lot to a front hub so it should be easy to find something strong/light/reliable for under $100.

With a rigid fork, you won't notice much difference between a QR or through axle, so don't let that be a deciding factor.

I know it's laughable, but I ride a Marz DJ3 fork. (my bike is multi-purpose). I'm used to it and it doesn't keep me from doing what I want to do though. I have a Hope pro II rear already. I was just thinking that with the 9mm axle it would just keep breaking. To answer your question... I don't know how the hell I break axles. I'm on my third one in two years though. I'll be riding and then the front wheel starts to feel a little clunky... and I know it happened again.

What front hub do you have now? If you have a cup and cone type bearing you can usually replace the qr axle with a solid threaded axle. Shimanos are usually like this. I've done it on quite a few hubs. A good bike shop should be able to do it for you if you aren't comfortable doing it.

Yes, It's a Shimano cup and cone type. The cones are totally pitted and the axle is broken. I'd like a new "better" hub preferably with a stronger axle.
