View Full Version : Newbie stock trials setup Q...

Hey I just built up a 16" Haro frame with a bunch of parts I got for really cheap to get started in trials. I'm only into this bike like 250 so far and I know mountain bike frames don't make good trials frames but its good enough to get started on. I have a alloy rigid fork on it right now and since the frame is intended for a suspension fork the BB sits about an inch or so below the axle height. I've been riding all disciplines of mountain bikes and BMX bikes my whole life and can ride fairly well. This bike however is near impossible to bunny hop! I'm assuming its due largely to the BB drop? I'm wondering if a taller stem might help this problem until I jump into a full stock trials bike later this summer. I have a 100x5? stem on it now. Do you think a 100x20? or similar stem might help with my hopping problem? Any advice is good advice! Thanks...

You said any help would be good help, and no-one else seems to want to reply. I'm new to trials, but I would think that your bottom bracket is the first issue. Most trials bikes have a higher bottom bracket, versus a dropped bottom bracket. (Your cranks are lower then your axles.) From what I gather this causes a huge prob. for back wheel moves.
I hope someone pipes in with an agree or disagree.
Good luck Caleb

your frame is very short and the bb is way too low. A trials frame will also have a shorter rear end also. start with a used trials frame and go from there, it'll help a lot.

Well a mtb is much better than a bmx for trials, so you're not off that bad. Alot of us, myself included, started on an mtb and got alot of the basic moves down.
How tall are you? That bike might be too short/cramped for you and holding you back quite a bit. When I say short, I'm referring to the wheelbase. Most trials bikes are longer than a comparable mtb. And yeah, that BB is way low.
If you find a used frame like David suggested, then you might be able to swap quite a few parts over from your mtb.

I actually found a used Norco Evolve frame this morning for pretty cheap that I'm gonna pick up. I'm about 6' and although it looks really short it doesn't feel to bad. I'm able to pedal kick gaps of about 3-4' now on it and pedal up? ledges about 1' or so. I kinda knew the specs on the Haro frame were gonna be tough but for what I got it for brand new I couldn't pass it up. I'm pretty sure everything but the headset will swap over to the Evolve since its post brake mounts.
I may also ditch the rear cassette and derailleur and go for a single speed setup to drop weight back there and I usually drive to the riding spots so...
Hopefully this new frame will fix my problems! If not then I'm just screwed...:wiggle:
Thanks for the replys!

If you search there is a guy in Peru who will build u a one of a kind frame-any geo u want-for like $80 US plus shipping. May be a better idea, and unique is always a good thing I think.

He posted that he loves his.

I have also seen a few people say that he has earned a good reputation as a frame builder. Seems to be more than a few who ride his frames.

He's earned the trust of many around these parts and I am always glad to sing his praise, I've been riding for 12 years, have been threw more than a dozen or so frames and Marino's is the best yet.
