I sent a bike to Canada for a guy and it cost $89 to ship. Three months later the Canadians call and say I owe $96 in duty charges; I said take it up with the UPS store and hung up. The UPS store is trying to get the duty charges from me, I said good luck; take me to court!

Yes and they shouldn't have released the bike to him unless the duty was paid. I'm not worried at all. Just beware.

I sell a fair bit of camera gear and always make sure the seller understands I'm not taking the item back if they don't want to pay duties and I'm not paying any duties.

I was going to get my new ride sent to a mate in Canada (from stateside) and trying to sort that shit out from here in England would have sucked.

This kinda reminds me of when I got really screwed one time with a BMX bike I purchased for my son. I'll try and give you the short version.

Bought bike off ebay

Recieved broken bike - (broken frame and totally bent forks)

woman I bought it from - real bitch - says bike was fine when she shipped it, now it was my problem.

Called UPS they said to send bike back to them so they can assess the damage and see if it was possibly caused during shipping

Reported her and made claim with paypal

Weeks later UPS tells me, "yes that a check was made out for damages occured during shipping."

*GET THIS*

After making the assesment UPS not only sends the refund check to her,
but also sends her back the damaged bike!!

So now here I am - No bike, down $215 for a bike that I don't have now, and down about $40 for the shipping, and no refund check!

Yeah, so now this bitch has my money for the bike, the bike itself, and the refund check!

Luckily paypal sided with me after I told them what happened and I was able to get a large portion of the money I dished out.

Big lesson I learned - is that if you ever need to buy something that is fairly expensive, pay for the shipping yourself and send UPS to pick up the item.
UPS only honors the person that pays for the shipping and will only make a refund check out for damage to that person. Thats why the bitch got my refund check and got the bike back.

Maybe the mods would consider putting a sticky in the FS forum so people know about the fees and duties they could get stuck with shipping from one country to another. There's lots of threads on this subject, but it seems people always learn the hard way.

Tally me onto the surprise duty fee list... only this time from Canada to US. I ordered my Meta through my friends' shop. I got the frame at a huge discount plus I had to pay for shipping. A few weeks later, they get a request to pay deliquent duties on the frame by PBB Global Logistics. The whole cost added up is still lower than retail, but the huge dicount has become merely an okay one.

I don't know how they deal with international shipping, but people should check out DHL. One of my suppliers uses them exclusively and I always receive my stuff a day ahead of schedule and haven't had anything damaged yet. I've recently opened an account with them and so far they're running roughly HALF of what it costs me to ship and insure a complete bike via UPS or FedEx. FedEx managed to bust up my Trico case and I won't even get into the troubles I've had with UPS in the past.

on the subject of duty charges, I find it's almost luck of the draw living in canada, as long as you don't ship with UPS. UPS charges an extra fee for the package to cross boarders. Other than that, I have shipped stuff from upstate NY and paid charges on small items, and shipped other stuff from china with no charges. I usually stick with usps for simplicities sake. Also, if you are in canada and have something shipped with USPS, once it crosses the boarder you need to check tracking info on the canada post website.

alright, get this. I just bought a handlebar from a forum memeber here, we agreed on $40 shipping included. The actual shipping cost for him turned out to be $20 at UPS, then when it gets to my door, I have a COD charge from UPS for "fuel surcharge" of $38.90! F*ckin bullshit!!!
