View Full Version : Bleeding HS33 without bleed kit

Will bleeding using a bath of mineral oil work for HS-33? (dump the ends on a bath of mineral oil and pump away). I read before that people who bleed with water just immerse in a bath of water and pumped but can't remeber where I've seen it. I could get mineral oil cheap like $5/liter (thinner than blood).

Has anyone tried it? Searched but couldn't find a similar topic here. I don't have a bleed kit but want to try it, I could ghetto an injection but I don't have any barb (is that what you call it?) to fit the hoses on both ends.

No bleed kit available anywhere here BTW. Maybe theres one 2 hours away ... by plane.

Thanks

I wouldn't immerse it in a mineral water, it'll get very messy.

I do water bleed with mine although it's not generally recommended (seals, etc) but haven't had any problem.

Bathroom sink will do the job. Open up the master & slave cylinder screws where you'd bleed & flush out the mineral oil inside completely.

Once you immerse both ends of the brake, you'll need to make sure there are no bubbles. See if I can explain this without confusing you:

1. Make sure the TPA is all the way in. Immerse both ends of the brake in the water.

2. Put one finger on the slave cylinder (pads side) and pump the lever down. Bubbles should come out from the lever side but don't leave the lever in the down position.

2. While holding the lever down, plug the master cylinder's bleed hole with your finger & let go of the slave cylinder's side & release the brake which will suck up the water.

3. Do this few times until you don't see any bubbles come out from the lever side.

4. Keep both ends of brake in the water and put the screws back. If you did it correctly, the brake should be pushing out the slave pistons.

It'll only take about 15~20 minutes to the complete job. One thing that's nice about the water bleed is that the brake is more snappier and if it leaks in the future, it doesn't get messy. Since you're in the Phillipines you'll never have to worry about it freezing either! (It has on me once...not fun)

Syringe is no problem. how would you do it without a barb(?) where would you stick the hose? Can't stick it in the hole or you'll get air in there too.

I'm still looking for an olive before I do the experiment...no stock here oh phillipeanese.. nevermind

clear bic pen (tape up the little hole on the shaft),cup of fluid, submerge the pen in the fluid (works best with a deep glass), cover the end of the pen (take all the inerds and the cap on the end out first obviously) undo the bleed bolt on the lever (for rear brake lie the bike on the drive side, so the levers bleed hole is facing up),pull the brake lever slowly until the fluid is level with the to of the threads in the bleed hole, place pen in hole (tapered side in) with your finger still on the end to make sure fluids still in the pen, take finger off and slowly let lever out, watching the fluid go in. leave the pen on there and pump the lever slowly to get air bubbles out (you will see them), and repeat process until youre satisfied. this takes some practise but once you get it youll be a bleedkitless pimp.

ok so theres the hole on the lever and the hole on the caliper. when you pump it out keep the lever down THEN put your finger over the hole on the lever then let go of the lever and then water gets sucked in from the caliper hole. then u let go of the finger thats on the lever hole. repeat until flushed out with a new set.
at first i didnt get it either and then i read the instructions again and got it

it feels real good. like snappy and comes back fast. i like them but i dont know how long it is until the seals "die" on me. a lotta people say its not even a big deal and it works fine for like at least 6 months or so im just like :bigthumb: thats long enough for me haha

Thanks for the info Aki and bklmrkt91.

Around 6 months later you will need to re bleed?

I think it depends on how much you ride & the setup.

I actually just did the water bleed with my Dengura, only taking out the rear section, took a bowl of water and pumped the lever down few times under water to get the air bubbles out. Then plugged the bleed hole with my finger when I pull the lever, and let the finger go as the lever retracted. Five minute job :)

well bleeding is so easy but im not sure how often youll have to. more importantly over time the seals should dry up if your using water since your not using some type of oil that lubricates them or w/e i hear you can just lubricate the seals using triflow or something now and then and youll be fine.

Got it thanks.

I was once told to add a few drops of concentrated dishwashing liquid soap on distilled water...maybe his idea was for lubrication (an old school guy does freeride, DH, BMX but not trials).

Anybody tried using machine oil, sewing machine oil that is? I think its thinner than Mineral oil. Have a friend who had this in his maggies. It was recommended by several guys too.

You really don't need a bleed kit, you open up the levers bleed screw and dro p in the mineral oil(baby oil) drop by drop.During the process, just tap the lever every so often, to get out the bubbles and BOOM..you're HS33 is blead.

I've had to do this several times and it works great if you don't have all the gear..

I tried the water thing on an HS-22 (bath bleeding of course) it works great as you guys said. It took me less than a minute to do it.
