View Full Version : The Stealth Hub...Why you should.

Hey all.
Been off the boards for a while, and figured i should post up a report on my new Stealth Hub.
A few months ago, I upgraded from the ENO to the BMX version of the stealth hub from True precision for my Zoo mod. Here are some things I've noticed:
Minuses:
1--heavy. This thing is very not light. 420grams feels like 4 pounds when it's in the box.
2--English bolts...7-16th's i think....who carries a 7/19th hex tool?
Ok...that's about it.
Pluses:
Engagement. Oh my GOD...the engagement. Absolutely 100% makes up for the weight. Instant power, and the ability to position my pedals exactly where I need them gave me 4 extra, effort-free inches on my taps the first day. Since I put the hub on, My max gaps (on the ENO about 6.5' to back wheel) have grown by over a foot and a half.
Another note on the engagement is the super tight tolerances keep the rider much more in tune with his drivetrain. You begin to notice immediately if your chain is getting loose....you can feel the chain slack much more quickly that with a standard hub. I actually caught a bad link in my chain by feel...I could tell through the pedal feedback that something was up. Crazy.
Strength: I never have that feeling of something about to slip. bearings are super strong, and very smooth. Wheel rolls very nicely.
Overall, this is a very confidence inspiring product, and I have to say, the folks at true precision are making the most underrated bike part on the market. I will never go back.

x2!
I got on my King a few weeks ago and it felt like a shimano hub. I have the MTB disc hub on my Stock and it's amazing. I had it for about 5 months now and like Giventofly mentioned, I never ever have to worry of it skipping. With my King I was constantly wondering "is it going to skip?" Yes it's 100 grams or so more than a king, but its worth the weight. I just bought lighter pedals, tires and wheel parts to save not only 100 grams, but about 550 grams!
For those not riding a stealth....Your missing out

I got on my King a few weeks ago and it felt like a shimano hub. Never thought I would ever see that comparison made in a million years. Dont get me wrong.. different stroke's for folk's and i'm sure that the stealth is a quality hub, but I would tend to think that you have no clue as to what your talking about or you have been one of the very few people that have had issues with a King hub.
However,I have a biased opinion ...due to the fact that I have had the same King for the last five years that has seen 5-6 different weel builds, with little to no maintenance at all, has never skipped once on me and has been spot on since day one.

wheee. i've ridden 18, 24, 36, 48, 72, 108 point, and stealth engagement hubs. all for trials.
i have a 48 point hub on my bike and it feels just dandy. i just sold a stealth hub for 20 dollars on here... how do you like those apples?

I've been on the same Stealth for three years now and will never go back. I'm not sure how King hubs get all the attention when there are better choices out there for trials.

because "better choice" is relative.
also people put too much responsibility on their bike. back at the vail worlds, there were no name euros with silent clutch lx hubs mopping the floors with american riders decked out with king hubs.
i can gap the same with my 48 point hub as i can with a king as i can with the "miracle" stealth hub. any advantage a stealth hub has is mostly placebo effect in your brain. of course you think that really expensive hub that you heard is so much better is going to feel better. you just bought confidence...

All good points. I dont want to start an arguement on this thread. We all sometime get heated about this crap.
To answer every one.
I've ridden since 96'. I've been on LX hubs, silent clutches, Hugi, RB, FFW, Eno, King and stealth and who knows what else. I've been on Kings for about 5 years and only had some skips here and there....But I hate to wonder "is it going to skip now?"
Its not the hub that makes the rider, it the training and technique. I've competed with some Elite riders that were amazing and they rode shimano hubs and clown bikes. They were tapping and I was just:nuts: ....It sucks being american and playing catch up....Thats why I stopped competing....I cant train 40 hours a week like those guys.
They wake up, ride, eat, afternoon nap, get fondled, ride and sleep again

can i get a video of a rider riding the stealth hub, and turning on their back wheel on a small area, like a stump?

Ok....I'll try to getsome thing from Rays...It wont be tall, but it will be a stump.
P.S. Is this a joke or some kind of science expierement ;)

This experiment is to show that instant engagement isn't always the best thing. If you accidentally back-pedal on each hop, even if it's just a little bit, eventually you'll have to back-pedal the rest of the rotation or pedal forward to correct the fact that your front foot is no longer in front, but on top.

in theory that could be a problem. I thought it might be.... but fortunatly I never feel like my pedal is creeping up

like omgs you could totally take your brake off while you're in the air from a hop and reset your pedals. I do it every day! Try it!

and buy a honda with a large spoiler, sit in coffee shops, and listen to an IPOD and jack off on your laptop.
I crack myself up:bowrofl:
I quit riding for 4 weeks in 2003. I could never do that again.

Was that at Motorama? I remeber that they had lawnmower races there.
Does the stealth hub cover trials use. That's the only complaint about king hubs that I have ever had. They make a good product and the reputation is well deserved.

i've never seen this before... :hsugh:
kenny beleay won world championships with a weak 28 point hub .
But the response of the stealth is amazing, but the weight is way too much and would never trust it .
48 or more is all good . then rather go for something lighter and durable
Peace

it does sound amazing.... but cant see how it is worth the extra money and weight... i guess ill have to wait till i try one. anyone in oz bough one?

I can believe that...
As far as durability they seem to be holding up great. I never fear of it skipping or slipping. But I've only been on mine for 6 months...But Hopsalot has been on his for about 4-5 years? And he hasen't had an issue I know of.

Anyone have some pictures or specifications for the internals?
I know it uses a roller clutch bearing but I am curious about the actual specifications. I'm guessing the extra weight is from it being strong enough to, unlike some "high-performance" parts, actually be reliable.
