View Full Version : Feedback welcome... Ribo 'Lite' shoe

Hi guys,
Just after some feedback if that's alright... Ribo's made us some prototype shoes and wanted to get opinions!
'Lite' is still a working title, but we wanted something to reflect the 'stripped out' nature of the shoe (no ankle sock) as well as the lightweight and flexible design (full suede).
The other idea was to try something that looked a little more 'normal' (I guess some people might call it boring? haha) compared with full ankle shoes.

Pic of other side? Judging from that side I'd never buy one because bleeding ankles suck.

Both ankles are the same height.
Ankle-bashing was a consideration - how many people suffer from it? I can't say I have ever hit mine and I don't believe the 'protection' offered by high sided shoes would make much difference in any half-significant impact anyway.

It's not impact, it's pedaling. With low-topped shoes, every crank rotation takes off a bit of skin.

don't like them, looks like a shoe for retards or spastics.. :dunno:
the current model looks fine, but with the missing "ankle sock", the shape of the lower part of the shoe (sole etc.) has to be different, more like a skate shoe style. It just doesn't look good that way..

Crikey... what cranks do you have? I have seen that with older style Tensile cranks (coupled with extreme foot placement on the pedals), but nothing recently.

I have big ankles though :dunno:
I'd be all over it if the ankle were half an inch higher.
Is the price any 'liter' than the full Ribo?

Haha, thanks Chris :bigthumb:
Bryan - price should be lower due to there being less work, yes - I will check for definite.

What's K26? I'm a mong :)
Pricing: projected RRP is £5 less than the ankle sock versions.

I don't think it looks bad, but I think it needs to be more than a £5 difference for anyone to justify that over the normal Ribo.

Do they meet BIU requirments? Doesn't appear that way to me.
And as much as poof as it makes me sound, what about color options?

I started running an old pair of AXO anklebiters in my Five Tens since I was tired of occasionally knocking my ankles and then hobbling around afterwards.

I like them Ad, but couldn't bring myself to buy them for the £5 difference.
The Davos sole is good, but maybe they need to look at changing the shape of the sole to make it look less "pixie like"?
What I like about my Ribo's is the snug fit around the ankle when under compression (if that's a good word for it). They seem to offer more ankle support than my Adio's. Some people may not like that, but when you have chicken legs like me.....
Basically, why change what works?

I'd be interested in the new low-ankle version. Would not buy the high-ankle version simply due to looks. And I don't feel the need for ankle protection. I run skate shoes currently and don't have trouble whacking my ankles. Maybe my 661 shin guards save my ankles and I don't know it. Whatever, I wouldn't buy the high tops.
Would the runner's wedge shape of the sole cause ankle roll problems? I'm surprised at the way it angles out.
A little more venting would be nice.
Does the rachet closure at the top have a real function? I mean, does it somehow enhance performance? On mtb and road bike shoes, if you pull up in clipless pedals during max power efforts, you don't want your shoe closure to stretch or slip. Not applicable to trials. Am I missing something?

I was looking at it for a while trying to figure out what I didnt like about it and decided that this was it.
The velcro straps too thick?
I dont know, this is all from an aesthetic point of view.

Adam I'd buy the ankleless versions like those ones, I hate sock tans so much. I only wear no-show socks in the summer.
Oh I ran the older tensile cranks with flip flop sandals a few times.. not fun on the ankles  . I dont care if shoes have ankle protection though.
Stylewise, they look alright, im sure they're nicer in real life? As long as they have that sole, that's all that matters :) They look similar to the $10 wal-mart mongoloid velcro shoes a few of us here use. I still like the older black leather ribo's the best, too bad they stopped being made.

the ankle is 1/2 the length of the foot, its the angle..its fucking hilarious. Ankle is like 3" and the feet are twice that, 6" foot

Ad a fuzzy little ball, and they are called peds. Cheerleaders wear them. And you question the aesthetics? ah, ha, ha, ha....

same... i never rip my ankles open because i stand on my pedals with my legs apart. i never understood the people that do brush their cranks. i dont know how differently two people coul dpossibly stand on the pedals?
as for the shoes- they still look like trials shoes... just black. which is a step in the right direction. but they dont look "normal" to me at all. the buckle and velcro doesnt help. i imagine old people and slow childen in velcro shoes. or indie kids these days too i guess. but not normal folk.

Wearing socks halfway up my shins just doesn't cut it for me ;)
Adam, whatever the shoes end up looking like is fine, since the sole stays the same. The velcro straps on the northwaves look a lot thinner/better however?

colour colour colour.
needs to be a combo of black/grey/whites
edit: just a real quick PS job
i know it still looks like a 'retard' shoe or whatever but a little bit of colour (well, shades of grey) make it a bit better. I dunno

any chance or getting a softer sole and a lighter shoe? more vents? i like the idea of these shoes, i've wanted to cut the neoprene out of my current shoes but dont want to mess anything up.

Ok, not ruin anyone's ideas, but what will this shoe be solving?
I'm all about a new shoe coming out, but how about something REALLY improved? What are some of the major obstacles shoes have to go through when riding trials?
How about sole inserts that allow riders to customize the stiffness of the sole? Or, a SUPER breathable version that dries quickly after that dreaded fall into the stream?
I don't mind the look of cycling shoes (velcro, buckles) but maybe a shoe that looks like a skate shoe, but has the functionality of a trials shoe?
I like Ribos, a lot, but this seems like it's just a low-top version.

I'm not really sure what the problem is with a skate style upper with laces, and a nice foam Davos sole.
I know a few guys are caught up with the shoe laces getting caught in stuff, but i tuck mine in and have had zero problems over 7 years of riding.
