Almost :eek3:

After 7 months of pretty hard riding (including a world round) my hydroxx long did not hold. Actually it was only a small hairline crack barely visible, but still, enough to keep me worried. Strangely enough it did not crack on the disk side, nor related to the disk usage. The hairline fracture was on the right side where the top tube meets the seatstay.
So I decided to fix it, while I get a replacement. Got in touch with this guy that welds for the Easton importer and has pretty good experience (and only charged me 10 bucks! thanks Josh!). Well to make the story short, I decided the bike also needed a refurbishment, so off went the paint and it was time to take those now useless hs33 mounts. So here it is:
the crack:

the sand blaster (it was useless)

So a more agressive action was taken:

On went the remover

Did you need to heattreat this? I am in the same situation with my xtp mod at the moment and am wondering if it is all worth the effort.

when you spend that much on a Koxx frame,.. of course it's worth the effort.

Now if you are an engineer,.. maybe not,.. but hey ignorance is bliss.

It was not heattreated, I guess it would have been better if done, but really don't know. I do know that because the hydroxx is 6000 series aluminium, the welding is not that strong...But hey, for how much i spent on it Im really happy if it lasts me more that 1 week.

thanks guys for the compents, im loving the look too :wiggle:

Hey Patricio, looking good there buddy

But I would've chucked on some Echo Booster and use that as an 'intergrated' system just to add some gussetting job around that area....relieving stress in that zone

I've cracked all my bikes in that area and will only buy bikes that have intergrated boosters now:greddy:

Yeah integrated booster, remeber that this crack was made riding disk brake, and the integrated booster prevents mostly flexing from using rim brakes. Though, now that you mention it, I did ride the bike for some 2-3 months with a rear hs33 and it flexed like hell. The bike does need an integrated or regular booster to run rim brakes for those interested.

Reid, consider it booked :wiggle:

Rode it a couple of times already, don't know if it's psychological but it does feel lighter....I guess saving 100grms helps:momaru:

That was a pretty quick turnaround. It will look great on the podium at the comp this Sunday.

good job Pat - it's such a waste to throw away an expensive chunk of aluminium like that. The bike industry has most owners convinced that a crack is the end of an alloy frame.

Koxx make's a great looking frame. It's just too bad that alot of them crack. I guess it a comp only bike technicly.

Nice job with the welding and removal of the HS-33 mount. Looks better than new!
