Hopefully you can all leave you comment that have nothing to do with the comp in the other Keyesville thread.
The event is gonna start 9 AM Saturday. Reason for starting so early is so all you traveling will be able to leave early on Saturday afternoon.
Classes will be Beginner, Sport, Expert and Pro. Mod and stock will be combined.
Hoping for about 5 sections with 3 laps.
BIU rules. That is set, I don't care who shows up, it will be BIU.
Expert and pro's will ride with a 2 minute time limit.
Camping is free at the event. I will have a couple hotels for whoever wants to pay for some space.
ssfta.com for directions and hotel info.
This event is NOT a NATS event regrdless of what the Natrials.com site states.

Is the frame too stiff???
Moment Designs
02-21-2008, 09:20 PM
It would be perfect if i only rode once a month. My body can't hang yet. Knees, back, wrist...all serious pain but I'm going to keep going with it in hopes that I can ride through it. Taps went down about 8 inches, sidehops up about 8-12 on each side. Drop gaps down a lot lot lot...things to front up a lot lot lot.
Literally couldn't bend over after the first week of riding it :hs:

No, much longer. The whole bike is shorter, serious pain in the lower back..I feel like I'm hunched over.

Way back when more riders showed up at comps, volunteered and were generally there for a good time (vrs artificial chest inflation). I'm not sure evolution is working the way I was led to believe...........

Just to put it out there, if youre there with a bike and not entered to compete you are not allowed to have your bike in the sections. You must compete or you cannot ride the sections.
ZMaeda
03-13-2008, 09:50 PM
As far as regstration I have nothing to do with it. When you get to the event go to the main Mtb area and sign up. This year is quite a bit different since I dont have full control of the trials thing. All I am doing i setting up the sections
sethman
03-13-2008, 10:04 PM

I'll see you all out there tomorrow eve- um, I guess this evening.
Honestly, you LA boys... $400 worth of shoes in a heartbeat but 35 bucks and a morning wakeup and you tuck tails and run. you ought to be ashamed of yourselves.
I for one would advocate for volunteer judges. Not only are the rules not terribly difficult to learn, but there's generally other people around to correct the judger if there is a mistake and, at the very least, it's approximately the same for every rider if there's one at a section. It's a rare luxury though, nowadays.

x2 Zak,
Huge props for setting up the sections. Had such a great time riding with everyone, nice to put some faces with all the guys here on OTN. Well worth the 16 hr. drive from Oregon. I want to go back and stay for a month to slay some more of those huge rocks. :D

I bet this is the absolute first time anyone has confused Hans/Hoss!! No disrespect to anyone meant! Hans Rey obviously is the man when it comes to introducing/promoting biketrials in the U.S. for the last 20 years.
Gary "Hoss" Onnen, on the other hand, is the MAN when it comes to showing new riders and their parents, the ropes of a comp. Though his riding skills are often suspect, Hoss is patient, thoughtful, encouraging and supportive of all biketrials riders. His specialty is explaining the ins & outs to newbies.
Hans rules when it comes to ridfing...Hoss rules when it comes to being an ambassador for the sport.
It was really fun to watch Hoss go ape-shit on some tough guy who was abusing his dog on a choke chain in Big Bear about 6 years ago. For those who don't know him, Hoss stands about 6'4" and weighs about 250 solid pounds. His nickname? Stone Cold Steve "Hoss-tin". His shaved head makes him look like a real hard-ass, but he is a pussycat in disguise. I'd want him on my side in a barfight. On a Motorama road trip in about 2001, he lived on McDonalds food for a week.

Cool...welcome to biketrials. Hoss is a great friend, and traveling partner. If you stay with the sport, you'll undoubtedly run into him again.
I'm glad you had a good time...it might inspire Zak to do more events. It's been a long, long, long time since we got that many riders to an event in SoCAl.

Biketrials is like that...once a guy gets over the hump of the learning curve, it's all over. 100% of free time is spent riding trials. I wasn't at Keyesville, so I don't know your son's riding skill level, but once he learns the back wheel balance move ( balancing on his rear whell, and negotiating obstacles on the back wheel), he will progress quickly. Unfortunately, because this is the flashiest of all trials moves, alot of beginning riders aspire to learn it, without getting the basics of balance down too.
One of Zak's strengths was that he rode for probably 3 years, under the tuteledge of 90's era National champion Jim Trigonis, learning the basics of balance, before Jim taught him the back wheel balance move. Once Zak learned that, coupled with the basics, he really took off. Jim used to take Zak to the Presidio area of the SF Bay, which is tons of small baby head sized rocks. This was sometimes frustrating to him, because they are #1) difficult to learn and #2) not at all flashy. This was a great lesson to Zak, as it taught him the basics of balance and choosing a line.
If your son wants to truly become a good rider IN COMPS, which is infinitely harder than freeriding trials, he should set up sections with section ribbon. This will teach him to ride WITHIN the boundaries, which is the essence of trials. Over the years, we've seen alot of good riders who could drop off really high stuff, but not stay within the boundaries. Sure, it's impressive to rear wheel drop off a 6 foot boulder, but it's even more impressive to see a good comp rider drop it to a virtual stop, with no run-off. This is where riding within section tape will teach the discipline of comp riding. There have been alot of riders who love what they think is trials, but is really "free-trials", with no regard for the skill it takes to stay within the boundaries. Sadly, these riders often get angry & frustrated at comps. I have had them tell me I don't know what I'm doing setting sections because they can't stay within the ribbons, which is a basic trials rule. I have often been accused that I don't know what trials is about. Oh well.
Anyway, sorry for the ramble...welcome to Biketrials!
Jon
