Well 5-8" is a big range and at the higher end of that range I really doubt that you will find anything sub 30. What kind of riding are you looking to do?

Ive got a friend that has a demo 8 for sale. At least I think he still has it. Its up in fort collins. If your interested, Ill look into it.

Hmmm, with those riding and weight parameters, go for 5-6 inch. It will do any kind of riding you want, and still pedal.

buy that rocky mtn if you want to hate yourself.

DEFINITELY not a XC bike and absolutely not under 30 pounds.
As said, look into a 5-6 poind hardtail. Eduros are nice, Trek Remedy, there are a LOT of bikes in that category.

Cannondale Rush sounds pretty close to what you're looking for. Cannondale says it is mid way between an all-mountain bike and a xc-racer.
weighs 31 pounds, 4.7 inches of travel
You could probably find an 07 for a little under budget.
Forget about the carbon and look at the 4, 5Z or 6Z.

i think akira has one of those for sale too...
and yes. it's a good bike. i didnt particularly like the way it rode but that's mainly because im weird and like bikes to fit odd. i have a long torso and short arms and legs, it's a total pain in the ass for me to find a bike that i fit right for xc.

Is that their 3.75" 4X bike? If so I don't think it's what you're looking for. You need to keep that travel pretty damn stiff and it's designed to be jumped and pumped. If it's not that bike.... disreguard.

my friend in denver just sold his well maintained 06 santa cruz blur lt for 1500 on craigslist. granted that was a good price, but if you look around. i fucking love mine (http://www.observedtrials.net/vb/showthread.php?t=21586). Its got plenty of travel and gears, and is sub 30lb.
