View Full Version : Goodbye Howard and good riddance!
This may be a bit premature but I'm in the mood for celebrating, looks like John Howard is not only going to loose government but he's going to loose his own seat as well :)
This is a great day for Australia IMO.

I'm looking forward to seeing Rudd in government. The guy seems to have genuine humility and commitment. But at the end of the day, the guy in the top seat doesn't matter so much as his party and their policies...
I'm also looking forward to seeing Costello as opposition leader. He joined the Liberal party back when they were real "little l" liberals and has a humanitarian background. Could be interesting.

i think k-rudd is too weak/inexperienced
our economy is pretty fragile right now, and with a new leadership/new policies, im just waiting to see the economy go down the shitter...

someone's been watching too much TV. The economy is not run by the government, it's mostly run by the independent reserve bank and by business.
There are more important things than the economy. This will be the term that is remembered for acting or failing to act regarding climate change.

its good that he gonna do a lot for the climate, although its a little futile seeing as we contribute less than 2% of the worlds greenhouse gasses. I think our research will help out a lot of other countries though.

I really think in the next 2 terms of parilment the greens will become a much more major player. Just look at how many seats they helped labour win this election through preferences.
And Povi, the Economy is in fine form at the moment. If the new government can resist the urge to give out so many tax cuts, and instead spend the money on infrastructure we will be in an even better position in 3 years than we are now

And we have far less than 2% of the world's population. Australians emit more greenhouse gasses per head of population than any other nation. A shameful figure.

Povi, go back to school, our economy is strong, if anything too strong, and this has led to the reserve bank's decisions to increase interest rates. We have a debt crisis and an overheated economy, partly due to Howard's first homeowner grants. The one thing that will fuck it is if we have a sub-prime mortgage crisis like the US is experiencing currently - and again this will be partly due to Howard's first homeowner grants. We will be somewhat cushioned from the US recession due to China recently overtaking the US as our major trading partner, so fingers crossed we will be ok in terms of balanced growth, steady wage increases, manageable inflation, and some environmental diligence.
Tomac you speak the truth, due to Howard's total ignorance of environmental issues, Australia has now overtaken the US as the biggest greenhouse gas emmitter per capita- worse than China, India etc etc.
In a recent peer reviewed study, Eraring power station, and Macquarie Generations' Bayswater power station (two of my biggest clients:() were named the dirtiest coal fired power stations in the world in terms of emmissions per megawatt of power generated- again, worse than those in China.
And I agree I think we may see the importance of the Greens in the next two terms increase - the Libs are gonna crumble over the next year.
Go Aussie!:werd:
Its ok Povi, I still like you (and your mum), its good that you have an opinion:bigthumb:
I'm wondering now if Howard was returned if Australia would have gone nuclear? or maybe the question is when?
Howards foreign policy was what sat the worst with me, I was backpacking through the middle east when Australia joined the US in the invasion of Iraq and I felt totally ashamed telling people I was from Australia :( Hopefuly our reputation overseas will be returned again one day but its going to take a long long time.
Its all pretty f#@ked up to me...

this may sound very childish/'but daddy said':
my dad, one of the most experienced motherfuckers in the corporate real estate knows A LOT OF SHIT. i completely trust him if he says there will be a recession in the next 5 or so years.
i meant to say in the first place that the economy is at its strongest right now, and it cant stay there for too much longer. what goes up must come down. happens roughly every 10 years, some worse then others
Maybe you should let your Dad make a post then......

nuclear is the way forward in reducing greenhouse emissions and lessening the damage of glabal warming (its going to get a lot worse no matter what we do) until we can develop and make fusion and then fission reactors...
we may be some lazy motherfuckers.... but in the greater scale of things we are the least of earths worries, i guess the most important part is making changes to set a good example.
our economy will be fine unless we stop selling stuffed koalas and kangaroos to tourists... or stop exporting fosters :momaru:

Fission we already do. That's what we know as nuclear energy. Fusion may be in the pipeline but shouldn't be counted on at this stage.
Subsidising or even encouraging the renewable energy industries would be a fine fucking start. It's disastrous how many Australian scientists and researchers are doing fantastic work on renewable energy (particularly solar) in other countries because the Australian government and industries didn't give a shit.
The only foster's I've ever had was in France. It's everywhere there. There's an Aussie pub in the middle of Paris, which is so kitch it's awesome, and they only sell Foster's and Hahn, the rest is Euro beer.

Natural Gas is great for emissions and the best thing to cook with yes. But it's still a fossil fuel which means it's still a limited resource. Let's keep some for our fabulous risottos in 2050.

plus a lot og natural gass gets wasted or lost though long and unmaintained pipelines, especially in other countries.... but yes lets save it for le cooking.
sorry joel, my bad on the fission reference, i for some reason thought there was something further than Fusion in relation to power reactors... but i guess we cant do much better than the sun eh.
