The rim was fine and didn't even make the boing sound. I plan to go down to a smaller tire to prevent this from happening

Nice. I would have pinched for sure, I decided to go ghetto tubeless on the front, no more pinch. I love it.
I go get the camera.

Been considering running my front tubeless, would be easy as I am running a Mavic Crossmax XL..... You burp the tire ever literocola???
Ask Darren Paterson. He ran tubeless for a fair while.

It has yet to burp on me. I run a pretty low PSI too, mabye 21 max? I love front wheel moves too, hoppin, spins and whatnot.
I am also running ghetto tubeless on my XC bike as well, and I cant get enough of it. I've only had to put are into the tire twice in 2 months.

You take a 24" tube and cut it down the middle. This is your rim strip to get a seal from Rim and Tire.
You put the valve stem into the hole and wrap the tube around the rim. Next you need to bead the tire. Once you get one side on, you put a few ounces of Stans into the tire. (This can get messy if you’re not careful)
Carefully bead the tire over the tube. Leaving what I call meat hangers.
Take an air compressor and fill that biznatch up. Some times it may take a while to actually bead.
But once the Stans does its job, I take a razor blade and cut the access 24" tube down, so there is maybe 4mm of tube hanging out of the tire/rim.
Here is Stans Video on how to bead the tire. Basically the 24" tube replaces Stans yellow rim strip.
