Is there some magical measurement that will allow the use of a 1/2" chain (or maybe with aid of a half link) to run a chain without the use of a tensioner

yes there is i think its sheldonbike.com or something like that. what you are looking for is a "magic gear" calculator

not only that but you have to factor in chain stretch so even if you do find a chain that fits it may not in a couple weeks

I run 18-15 tensionerless on my BT7, and the stays work out to be about 380mm. I believe it says 379mm on the BT website if you want to be exact.
