Is there anyway to cut down on the screeching noise my brakes produce every time i use them, and what exactly makes brakes so damn loud?

When they're loud, it means they're working. You should hear mine!

If you ride maguras, then no, there probably isn't.

you could always go for double discs or double v's but if you are only unhappy with the sound of your brakes then it probably won't pay off.

Tar always makes noise. Some softer pads are more quiet on a good grind. The sound is produced by the pad quickly binding ,releasing, and vibrating the frame to create waves. Earplugs are the least expensive solution, and come in a variety of db reduction ratings:x:

You can always reduce the noise by putting harsh grind though if you're using softer compound pads then it may wear down pretty quickly. I found Koxx browns to be relatively quiet as well as Heatsink blueberry's. CRM's are loud! But love the noise :)

Why do you want to get rid of the bike's mating call? I know multiple people who have met new (to them) trials riders because they heard their brakes. Later down the road you will say, "why the hell did I want to get rid of this wonderful noise??" The only time my brakes have been quiet was when they were slipping.

While I don't approach that level of arousal, I dig brake squeak, too. It really makes you feel like you're working it ("it" being the bike, not your personal equipment).

this is absolutely true. a booster and a light grind quieted my denguras. i found the squeak annoying as shit at first, but now i want it back. :wtc: and for the record, even with very little noise, these things lock great.

Depends on the pads you're running too. I have the ZOO green pads, even with no grind these puppies stop on a dime even when there is little pressure applied to the brake.

squeak means its slipping. A good brake will be completely silent

Nah, for that split second when the pads are just floating the the magura and you squeezed the lever and the pads ahev slightly touched the rim they are gonig to squeak. It doesn't mean they suck. When the pads finish closing on the rim then it stops squeaking.

if your pads squeaking after the pads are finished contacting the rim (like slipping of a ledge or something) then they suck.

Yeah, it should just be a quick 'bark'.
