View Full Version : Thoughs on 26" to 24" conversion
This not an immediate future plan of mine but it doesn't seem unreasonably crazy or expensive depending on your 26" setup. Cost of 2 24" wheels.
If you're full disc all it would require is 24" wheels with disc mounts (swap disc's off 26" wheels.) If not full disc it would potentially require an intermediate bracket to get magura's on the 24" rim.
I don't know anything about the geo issues surrounding this modification besides the obvious. You'd be lower to the ground on 24's. Is there anything inherent about smaller wheels that requires shorter wheelbase??
i assume gearing would have to be different on the 24" if you wanted to match your original gearing.
Please comment with any advantage/disadvantages you believe this setup would have.

You know that 24" bikes are really only good for having a lot of fun on the streets right? Theres a reason most 24s are built with streety geometry as opposed to trials specific. If you're thinking about putting 24s on a 26 inch frame, I don't think there would be any advantages at all, only disadvantages, such as shitty tire/rim choices. If you still insist on doing it though, I think a shorter wheelbase like you said would be the way to go, the bike would be pretty damn flickable.

Is there something about a 24" wheel that is bad for trials but good for street? Wouldn't it have some but not as much of the advantages of a 20" mod? Since I'd still be using a trials specific frame wouldn't I just get some weight loss and a tougher tire (assuming I can get solid 24" wheel Rims and tires I like.) If there's no advantages to smaller tire size then why do mod's exist? to be more streety?
I was thinking a 24" wheel on a trials frame would be like going halfway to a mod. Nevermind what 24" manufacturers goals are if I stick with a trials frame it should be any more street specific than it was with 26" wheels.
I wouldn't buy a smaller WB frame just to try this, I'd just save up for a RESET or 24 UK if I wanted to do that.
Thanks for responding, not looking to be combative just get input on advantages or disadvantages I may not be seeing.

Going to 24's on a 26" will drop the frame an inch lower.
Just something to consider.
why do people still think 24 is purely for street? this is a total joke. seriously.

because the FIRST 24 trials bike was the Eddie tongue by ashton... I had the only one in oz. It was great for street (eT being a predominantly street rider) so it was suited more to spins and streety/bmxy type moves (short wb, steepish ha)
i stil wish id kept that frame... best most funnest bike ever :coold:
i have set my 24 up for pure trials and it feels great
