View Full Version : NATS EVENT AUG 4th

07-02-2007, 08:36 PM
So I'm starting a new thread to get an accurate count as to who plans to attend this event on Aug 4th in Richmond Va. We are trying to get a head start on preperation so if you plan to attend please post in this thread!!

Also: Wehave already lined up a good amount of sponsor money which is allowing us to make this a comp that people will talk about year after year much like the Motorama comps were.

We started by making this a NATS event.... so I want to see all the Pros (East coast at least) make it to this one. As an incentive there will be a hefty purse for Pros finishing 1-3rd and all class's Pro-beg will be recieving engraved trophies...thats right no crusty medals at this comp. We are also in the process of lining up excellent trials related prizes from various vendors too.

In addition we will have tents for spectators and riders with a generator running fans to keep everyonoe cool, so the heat is no excuse not to make it! There will be plenty of free water provided this year as well and we will also have a food vendor onsite to sell sandwich's and drinks.

The sections are going to be even better than last year and no class of rider will leave disappointed. Our pro and expert sections will be laid out in respect to what many have watched in the vids of Euro comps and they should prove to be very exciting. This is going to be a highly organized event and our hope is to add a spark to the east coast trials comp seen. Also there is talk about this being the start of a mid-atlantic fall series :x: .

This year the Belle Isle Competition is one of the NATS events!

Date: Saturday August 4th

Times: Registration from 7:00am-9:00am
Beginner / Sport 9:00am-12:00pm
Expert / Pro 1:00pm-3:00pm
Awards and such Around 4:00pm

Location: Belle Isle, on the James River in Richmond, VA (Check out the
map provided) *Note, it's on the south side of the park.

Entry Fee: $25

More Info: Beginner and Sport will run BUI rules, while Expert and Pro run UCI. Last year was a huge success, help out by participating and make this year even better!

Great, make it happen Bryan!!! Also, I'm boarding as many as I can at my house for that weekend for those who are on a tight budget....Brandon and Angie already have dibs in the spare bedroom but there is plenty of floor and couch space left throughout the house and I assume other Richmonders may do the same??

Haha as of now things are going great. You should talk to Ryan though, he's working on things down there now and he'll definetly let you know if there's something we need. (I'll tell him to tell you)
But as far as a fork, I have a bad feeling it's not just my fork. :wtc: I'm gonna post up here maybe today trying to figure out what's totally wrong though.

So, with the UCI rules, are the 26" bikes required to have working gears at this event?

mikeyr89
07-05-2007, 10:14 AM
UCI ruling as in pedal and bashguards count as a dab. Besides that, single speeds are fine.

muddyfox

Yep, UCI allows single speed.

man, I would love to come to this event. What kind of money is in it for pro 1-3? The reason I ask is because I would have to fly out and I'd like my ticket to have the possibility of being reimbursed since I'm not very rich. Also, does anyone know how far the nearest airport is from the event? Any help would be cool. Thanks.

Robbins, what up. Owwwwww!!! You know I'm living in DC now and I live about 2 miles from Reagan airport in DC. From my house it's about 1 1/2 hours to this event in Richmond. You should come out and kick it at my place and we could go down and shred the event. Anyway, shoot me a call if you're serious about this. Still have the same number. If you start looking for a cheap airline ticket, check out AirTran or ATA airlines. They usually have some good deals from Denver to Washington.

I'm very intrestead in doing this event, I live in the UK and wont be attending the BIU worlds as there is only 2 rounds this year so it doesn't seem worth it.

I can get flights direct to Richmond from here but I would need to be picked up and if someone wants to be really nice! Somewhere to stay for a bit. I'd like to come over for more than just the weekend as it doesn't seem worth it cosidering the cost.

This is all I bit short notice I know but hopefully someone could point me in the right direction?

we would love to have you....and it looks as though you may have some car poll options to get here!!

To answwer your question about the prize money for the PRO's: The sponsors keep rolling in forthis event and its allowing us to treat our riders like kings this year. As for righ now the prize money is ranging from $175 and up and also we have many goodies from our sponsors to give away as well.

They may be more money availible for the top riders depending on what Mikey and I decide on....just knowthat it will be worth your time prizes or no prizes!!!

I could arrange to pick you up......we'll have to see if anyone can let you crash wioth them for an extended period. Most of us have our jobs to go back to after the weekend so it may be difficult.

Try hotels.com too there are several hotels with in riding distance of the comp spot. Let us know if there is anything else we can do to help get you out here......I'd love to make this an international event:Wavey: .

this isn't that kind of group. as the one who sucked the most at the last belle isle comp (my first comp) it's very low pressure and everyone is very supportive. ...that sounds so gay. i think everyone recalls being at a very basic level, so they're cool about it. no one's gonna be like "wow this guy really sucks, i'm embarassed for him." bring your bike and entry fee. you'll be glad you did.

You should compete in beginner.......thats what the class is there for. Everyone in this sport knows what it was like to enter their first comp as a begginer.............there is zero pressure to perform like a pro as it is "beginner" class.

You will be so awded by the pro's anyway that you will not think twice!!! Please come out and compete....we'd love to have you!!!

I've got the hookups!! (normally a day of HD filming from this guy starts at $500, and thats just for him.) I will hopefully get at least 2 guys filming.

i am thinking of competing maby next year but just to get an idea how good do you have to be not to make a fool out of yourself if you know what i mean.

everyone has been there, nobody is going to make fun of you. I was worried about making a fool of myself when I did my first comp, but even the pros (Chris Santos, JJ Gregorowiczs, others) were very supportive and gave tips. The main thing is to take your time in the sections. If you try to rush through them, you won't do half as well as if you take your time. Use the whole amount of time, you don't get a better score if you do it faster.

Hey All, I'm back from orientation up in Wisconsin and now I'm all in for the comp. I would like to set up all of friday, so if anyone can make it for the morning, afternoon, or whenever you can I think I'll be there. Also, I'm coming down Thrusday (that's the plan) So ride thursday/look to set up and start setting up. Set up all of Friday and ride with the remaining time we have left. And then Comp on saturday! I'm so pumped and everything is perfect.

The only thing for me though is I dunno if I can participate in the after comp, because I'm driving up to MD for the night and next few days. It sounds like that'll be okay anyways becuase I don't think an 18 year old will be able to get into the pub anyways.:momaru:

See you all soon!

Its piss easy to get there..Take the downtown expressway off I95 (exit 74a) then take the first exit off that (canal st, 20cent toll) go thru a few lights and take a left immediately after the crown plazza, thru 1 more light and the road dead ends at tredegar st, turn right and look for the parking after the civil war museum. :bigthumb:

Thanks guys. :bigthumb:

Last year I booked a hotel south of where the comp is held. I thought I was getting something closer than I was last year.

The map that the hotel provided made it look like the hotel was located right on the water and I would just have to cross the bridge and be there. In reality I'm like 13 miles away. Uhhgg. Not too bad, but oh well... plus I was trying to find a hotel with an indoor pool for the kiddies so they would be happy.

Next year I'll get something closer. (Hopefully)

I'm starting to keep track of all these comp location addresses so I don't have to go searching for them every year.

Can't wait for the comp!

Alright, two days till the comp!!!!!!!! It looks like the Pro's are going to have their work cut out as their number competing will be deep......word also has it that Mike Steidley will be making this comp!!! So, hopefully it will be a heated battle.

If there are any pro's that are undecided the Pro prize money will be much more than seen at a typical comp.....so get off your buts and make it to Richmond.

Expert and sport class looks like it will be stacked too which is great.

The weather forecast looks good in terms of not having to ride in the rain but it looks like its going to be a hot one so bring your sun screen. 90+deg

We will be providing two tents to escape the sun and one tent will be setup with 4-5 box fans to help everyone cool down. Also, "plenty" of water will be provided and some small snacks too.

I hope to see everyone out there and I look forward to this comp being a memorable one...........lets go ride!!!!!!!!!

Just to clarify, it is not that I don’t want to come, hell I already made motel reservations,,, Some things have come up that are going to make it almost impossible to come. I have to be in the office Saturday morning for a few hours, so I might be able make it about ½ hour before the experts are scheduled to ride (12-12:30). Is that a problem?

I will do everything I can to make it, I still have my motel reservation. I want to experience the Richmond rocks (again) and the BEER! :yum:

If I get top 3 this time, I will do expert next comp. (NC)

I think that the sign would be cool to have, especially because we won't have to carry it half a mile. It might be good to make a stand for it, instead of finding a crack to wedge it in. (just a couple 2x4's with a 3/4 inch slot, one 2x4 at either end, would work)

So Matt, Ryan, and Hinmaton are out working on the sections right now! I don't know who else went out there today.

Its going to be HOT tomorrow. Forecast says 95+ and Sunny. There is NO SHADE where the comp is being held (except for the tents we are taking). We are going to have water there, but it will probably go quick, so I'd suggest bringing some. I am not sure how much Ryan bought.

I am going out this evening to help finish setting the sections if they aren't done.

And like I said, we are going to have it filmed in HD. One guy will be filming all day, and a second will arrive at around 12. It will take me a while to edit and make a video, since we will have up to a couple hundred gigs of footage, depending on the format and resolution we choose.

Its going to be an amazing event!

First, I want to thank Mikey for teaming up again to host another great comp. Second, huge thanks to all those who helped setup and break down the event.Hinmanton (DANG), John (JohnGlazer), Matt ( Muddyfox), Brandon and Angie and so many others who really helped make this the event that it was. I also want to thank Webcyclery www.webcyclery.com (http://www.webcyclery.com/) , Midwestbiketrials www.midwestbiketrials.com (http://www.midwestbiketrials.com) and Bizport www.Bizport.biz (http://www.bizport.biz/) for their sponsorship and prizes and hopefully they will participate next too.

As for the event, it was awesome. The sections from Beginner to Pro were extremely challenging for all but not to the point were you felt your life may flash before your eyes in order to get out of the section!!! It was the hottest day of the year and the heat was the only real thorn in the event. Fortunately we supplied a “huge” amount of water for everyone and several large tents to cool down under…and the fans were surprisingly effective I thought. NOTE.Next years comp will be held in early October (most likely Oct 08) or early June when temperatures will me in the 60’s with no humidity..NOTE.

The rider turnout was more than expected and I hope that he heat didn’t scare any from returning next year. Thanks to al the riders that made it out and I hope the comp was one that you will remember.

Now for the results! The Pro class was relatively deep with some of our country’s top riders battling it out. Look for the HD video showcasing these guys navigating their way thru some truly amazing sections. Expert class was just as exciting with a few riders, myself included, who got their first real taste of what Expert class is all about. Sport class had another great showing with 14 riders making it out. We also managed to have 2 beginners come out and compete and mad props to Jon Glazers dad for hoping on a bike and giving it a go!!!!

Thanks again for everyone that was involved and please leave plenty of feed back and any links to pics and news of the event that you may come across. We hope to see all the same faces and more in 08.

Ryan

Its going to take a little while for the video to be done. Charlie had to go back to VA Tech this morning, so I won't get the raw footage until Friday or Saturday. It will probably be a couple weeks until the final video is put online.
I will upload pictures that my brother took either tonight or tomorrow. I didn't get too many pictures, due to the extreme heat and my brother helping out with the filming. We ended up with about 50 gigs of footage from his nicer camera, and similar from the other. It was hard to get everyone, since there were so many groups of riders, but hopefully we will end up with some good shots.

Thanks Jay! I was surprised I did so well, I haven't been riding as much as I have wanted recently and it was damn hot, but now I will have to ride a lot so that I will get through some of the expert sections at NC.

Brian did ride like a champ!! The sections were seriously hard in that heat. Made props to all the riders:bowdown:
Looking forward to an even bigger and better Belle isle comp next year.

Sorry, I could'nt read the fiance's hand writing..corrected now though!

As for next year I think we may try and get the comp lined up with the large xtera mountain bike event they host....this way we can have a much larger spectator base and its held in early-mid spring. I'll be working on lining up sponsors and such for next years event in the next couple months so it should be an even bigger spectacle next year!!!

hey everybody! Angie and I had such a great time. A big thanks to Ryan, Hasti, and Mikey and everyone else who helped with setting up an awesome comp. We were taken care of, especially considering the heat, there was water and food and even fans and tents to cool the riders down. One of the best and well organized comps to date!! The sections were right on par with every class, it showed that you thought through every section when running the tape. We hope to see this particular comp grow every year, we're hooked. Great swag too.

To anyone who couldn't make it, this is definitely a comp to make next year. Excellent planning and excellent riding. It was worth the trip, the time, the money, the "everything". We can't even compare it with another comp.
This comp shows us what dedication to the sport can do. Can't wait for next year!

Not to sound like a broken record, but this comp was awesome! Hat's off to everybody involved in putting it on. I honestly don't think I've ever been that hot, I think I ran out of sweat towards the end and starting to become beef jerky. Good times, thanks!

Props to everyone that chipped in at the end to pick up!
The end was kind of a blur. I think my brain is still a little over cooked from Sat.
Mikey & Ryan- you guys are the shit!

I think that comp. was so good, that it needs to happen twice a year...

Who's up for fall comp.?

johnglazer
08-06-2007, 06:44 PM
That would be awesome if we could have one in the fall and one in the spring!! Maybe one NATS and one non-NATS.

LAME! ;)

I was thinking having one a year like the one we just had, and then a second (non-NATS) comp like the one for x-terra games or last years comp.

or we could just have a Richmond Ride, and just have a bunch of people come to richmond one weekend and have a big group ride.

There was also a newspaper photographer that took about 30 pictures of my face while I was trying to check. Every time I moved to follow the rider, he would run in front of me, get right in my face and click click click click click.

Hey everyone, thanks so much for coming out! This comp was so amazing and we owe a huge thanks to Ryan. Ryan really took the reigns and made this comp something amazing. Also a personal thanks to Ryan for housing me and being a great host. Huge thanks to Hasti for helping out with everything too! Basically.... Ryan is the friggen man.

Thanks to everyone who came, helped out and just rode! It was so awesome and next year it will be better and cooler. Thanks again to everyone. Awesome riding with you guys, and I think the idea of OTN days 08 being there is what we need. Alright,

The majority of pics are from a photographer at www.mikehambergerproductions.com (http://www.mikehambergerproductions.com) . So, you would probably need his permission or have to have a link to his site??? Hopefully others will post their own pics.

Also, there should be an HD vid coming soon.

Charlie (the guy that filmed) is supposed to give me the footage by tuesday night. He is at VA Tech finishing up a project, so he wasnt able to get it to me saturday night, like we had planned. After I get the footage, I will edit it and put a vid together as soon as I can.
