My chain doesnt have enough wrap. I Put a new KMC pintle half link chain and a new cog on my bike (15 tooth cog in the rear, 18 tooth ENO up front) I thought that would fix my problem. I tried to take one more link out of my chain, but I cant. I would need about .5mm more stretched chain to lose a link.
I see it as I have two options: Switch to a 14 tooth cog or use a derailleur as a tensioner. My freewheel is still a small possibility, but the insides look great and it skips when a FW usually wouldnt. I thought it was my freewheel at first by the sound of it. It has to be the chain.
What do you think?
Oh, Im on a Simtra ST-1

go to a bike shop and ask for an old rooted derailer, most will give you one free. fix it in place and see if it is indeed the problem. if it is then just use it until it falls apart and get one of those tensioners that have two jockey wheels.

I would hate to bash a paul melvin. They be expensive.

keep using free derailers from the LBS then. i've never paid for a derailer for my trials bike, gone through probably 5 plus the two in a box in my cupboard... heavy though, if you care.

Yeah, Ill probably end up making something lighter. haha.
Have you or anyone you know witnessed the chain skip. Can riding around with the brake on make it happen? I spent a lot of time trying to diagnose a chain issue before only to find out it was my freewheel or not a length/tension issue.

My chain has skipped. Currently I have a shimano freewheel on my bike with better chain wrap because its a different gear ratio. Doesnt skip. It DID skip with the shimano freewheel and a slightly longer chain.

shimano freewheel on a trials bike? that's like using a daihatsu mira gearbox in a lambo.

I put the shimano on to see if it would still skip. I am going to put the ENO on another bike to see if its indeed the ENO that is skipping. The shimano will not be on there for long.

So i found a bent Sram Force rear deraillleur. Doesnt weigh TOO much. Just put some spacers on either side of the jockey wheels and it pretty much fits my pintle chain well. I think I just need to shave a small piece down to keep it from still hitting che chain. And my skip is GONE. Eno back on and everything.

Lesson learned: A little slack in a trials chain is deadly. Unless you have horizontal drops, you should always run at tensioner of some sort.
