View Full Version : Rear Hub Opinions : Chris King SS Disc VS Stealth SS MTB Hub

Anyone have any opinions of the two, those are the two id like to get... my real only indecision is if instant engagement is a good idea or not... some like mild pedal movement before engagement for pedal kicks and such, so I'm torn between the two hubs, just looking for what others think...
My good and bad points...
Chris king = 72 Engagement points, Well known hub with great warranty... Iv used one before an its so smooth and nice...
Stealth Hub = infinite engagement points for instant engagement... Less known company... Hub gets many reviews saying its better than a chris king... Both similar in price... Smallest cog available is 14T (not that big of a deal)... Silent hub... Instant engagement is supposed to make for a longer lasting hub cause of less wear from no pedal play...

Everyone I know that tried using a stealth hub for trials has blown them up. I don't think they handle the high torque of our sport very well.
Also, green text on these forums is impossible to read.

Yea i heard that, BUT supposedly they were revamped a few months ago and are way way stronger now... I know one of the guys i ride with, His brother rides one for trials and has had if for 6+ months now no problem, and hes 210+ lbs... Im 113, given that doesnt have ALOT to do with tourqe...
P.S Changed green to darker green, hope that helps...

Im reading on OTN, via a search, that alot of people say stealth hubs "explode" but the other half of people say they have used them for a while... so yea, that doesnt help...

I'm sure that some people are out there using Stealth hubs for trials without problem. They are probably a very well made hub that can last a long time.
But you do hear about more problems with them and trials than I would be comfortable with.
Basicly, trials puts a lot of stress on a hub. No brand has a perfect track record in our sport, but certain brands have better reputations than others. Hope and Chris King are two brands that most people agree you can trust. Others, like Stealth, should be purchased/used with a small amount of caution.

What about Hadley? Other than being SUPER hard to find, i read nothing but good things... the also supposedly make a 108pt model...
AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DOES ANYONE KNOW THE HADLEY COMPANY WEBSITE...
i cannot find it, and its pissing me off... im probably searching hard and they dont even have one...

They stopped making the 108 a while ago, unfortunately. I don't know if I'd put them on the same level as King or Hope, but I'd certainly run a hadley before I ran a stealth.
They have never had a website. Best source for information on their hubs would probably be bti-usa.com

I heard about the stealth back in 03's motorama, from Stephen Maeder. He said he liked it better than the king and he could never ride a king again.Going from instant engagment, back to every 5deg, though him off.
I've never tried one and Kings rep to me, is worth it's weight in GOLD

I wanna ask why so bad, but then again i wanna stay with my "fuck it" and just buy the hadley... I am light and new to trials so, I'm going to try the hadley, if you are right i will come back here when it breaks or if it sucks and agree, but for now I'm going to forgo any persuasion due to the fact that its impossible to get a group decision on bike parts, lol... thanks for the help tho!

i think the majority of the members on this forum will tell you to get a king instead.

Check out the Hadley internals, the sicklines link seems down, but it might return, who knows:

If you get the model where all 3 pawls engage at the same time, you should be fine. Apparently, Hadley doesn't have a website, only a phone number, and they support users very well with replacement/warranty service. WhiteRavenKS knows a lot about it, as I believe he's had experience with them. If I were you, though, I'd get a Hope Pro 2 trials hub. They have a good track record, and are cheaper than Hadley! Lots of trials riders are using Hopes!

Hadley hub won't fit your mod bike.
Hadley = 135mm spacing
A3 = 116 spacing

Yeah the trials one won't work either i have it on my stock. Starting to break too after two years or so although not used as trials hub the entire time and actually has stopped skipping since i have put the trials gearing back on. My have just been chain skippage but yea for mod go ENO
