i bailed and went over the bars today. :rant2:
Im trying to figure out wtf happened, not sure if it was my king that skipped or the chain.
I pedalkicked, loud "clack" sound, cranks rotated probably 40° without any engagement/drag (thats alot, my king never skipped that much).
BTW there was almost no force applied, i pedalkicked to drop down from a rock.

Does what i wrote above sound like chain skipping or was it really my hub?

try changing your rear cog and chain, it worked for me

If the chain is skipping it's time for a new chain + chainrings, basically a whole new drivetrain. This happened on my trail bike awhile ago. Basically the teeth had just got worn down a lot and the chain would just slip. You can look at the teeth and see if there is excessive wear.

Sounds like the typical King skip to me.

typical king skip, I once had a hub that did that every time i did anything :)

The King hubs will do that from time to time. I get that about once a week. It is scary, but I don't know that there is a better alternative.

Seems to happen to me most often when sidehopping in the direction of my forward foot. Feels like if I twist the frame by pushing on the pedal and jumping to the same side, the hub disengages for a split second. It will also happen randomly when very little pressure is applied.

I don't have a remedy.:dunno: I guess it's the price to pay for high performance.

So its probably the king...
I rarely had those mini skips when very little pressure was applied but not once such a huge skip.

just to be diplomatic, in ~4 years of riding two different kings for trials, I've never had this happen.

its the chainrings/chain

I have a king on my STP right now that skips exactly like that. Its full heavy duty and was rebuilt with tri-flow. I have another king that I got used that has never skipped at all. Not sure why this happens sometimes with certain king hubs. In my case I'm quite sure it wasn't chain skip.

If it was such a signifigant sound i wouldn't imagine it was your hub......the chain is probably just stretched out by now, and if it's gotten to the point of skipping then it's probably ruined your cog and chainring.......time to get something cool?
Maybe some gears made out an exotic metal.....Platinum? rofl
and one of those half link chains? in gold?

You'd be roll'n fly homie!

it was the king skipping.

I've had a gold king, red king, black king. something else. Some skipped, one has never skipped. ever. 7 years, classic rear- nothing upgraded, never opened up, never cleaned, never skipped or given any troubles.

my king only skips when under light to medium load.... NEVER when going for a gap or drop.... just sometimes when start to pedal into something.... Just had it re lubed and it hasnt given me one bit of trouble..... I have had this hub for about 6 years. It was sent back to king once where they replaced a few bits inside, but thats about it... serviced twice over those years.

Peace

Hey, Cryo.

I addressed this in an earlier thread.

Your King mechanism MAY be slipping, but there is a VERY inexpensive way to be sure it's not your chain or cogs. Go to your local shop and get yourself one of THESE (http://www.parktool.com/products/detail.asp?cat=5&item=CC%2D3) from Park Tools. I used to go through 2 chains, a stainless 20t front chainring and a stainless 17t King cog about every two months. There's so much stress on a trials drivetrain that even if you run singlespeed - as most do, now - you're going to wear chains out much more quickly than the average mountain biker. Once you've got the Park tool mentioned above, measure your chain religiously and replace it every time it stretches to .75 (once you have the tool in hand, you'll understand to what this measurement relates). If you do this (and you've got a good chain-line), you can get away with using inexpensive chains like a SRAM PC-48 or PC-950 (For trials, I'd still stay away from anything without hardened pins, though).

Even if you do find that your hub is the problem, this tool will help keep an excessively worn chain from destroying expensive King cogs prematurely. There is also a tool made by Rohloff (http://www.rohloff.de/en/products/hg_ig_check/index.html) that measures the teeth of your chainring/cog to make sure they're within spec.

Hope that helps,

-Todd

Mine skips from a sudden pedal stroke, say do a drop to rear & then try to engage right after. The odd skip happens from time to time :\
