So I just bought my first trials bike, and I need some help getting it set up.

It's a Monty 219 X-alp, Monty stem, cranks and rims (ground and tarred). Cheapo V-brakes and chain tensioner.

Here's what I'm thinking....better V-brakes and levers (XT?), new chain tensioner, seat has to go. What else? Any recommendations?

Thanks, and sorry for another newbie post...but everyone likes pictures.

I agree. You can get Avid SD7 brakes for a fair price, and Avid levers as well. The Avid FR5 levers can be bought for $15 or less. Speed Dial 7 levers are $25-30 a pair.

You can get a cheap BMX-style tensioner for cheap as well. Buy a new chain if it's not new and you cannot trust it as well.

Go for the avid brakes and if ur just starting trials you should probably get a pair of shiny guards.

Keep the brake arms and brake levers and invest the money in pads and housing!
I'd suggest Odyssey Linear Slick housing and Plazmatic or Heatsink pads.
And remove the tar from your rims!

Thanks everyone!

Here is what I'm thinking:
-New Chain, and tensioners, shin guards
-Avid SD7's with SD7 levers and Plazmatic pads, new housing
-Clean tar off the rims
-Pull everything off frame and beadblast for a nice dull finish. Way too much chrome right now.

Does anyone have any SD7's Levers or brakes arms for sale? What about a small mod seat?

There was an ad posted in the for sale a while ago for some online retailer selling the brakes for dirt cheap.

That is a crazy amount of tar.:eek5:

it looks like it was melted onto the rim or something. Its going to be fun cleaning that up.
I cleaned off my tarred mod rim with some steel wool and acetone.

you can clean your rim by grinding it
