View Full Version : 5-6-7 purgatory practice video

Most of the NE crew went out and rode today (yesterday) at Purgatory Chasm, near Worcester, MA. Despite having been told to leave before we even got started, we still managed a good day.
Here's a hastily-thrown-together video of our ride. Any resemblance to editing is purely incidental. I didn't have much footage to go on. Most of the time I just left the camera on the ground, so the angles aren't great, and some of the shots are very overexposed.
The riders are myself, y_nairb, Firewrx612, Keeprollin, and ty_bikes

haha, nice one.
That was a really fun day, I was so tired from work, at one point I was have having palpitations. Somehow I managed to stay awake.
It's hilarious seeing my 6" ups (and other heinous riding) inter-cut with all you super stars. :momaru:

Are they not allowing trials riding at Purgator any more?

we're disturbing the peace, unlike the hundreds of screaming kids and obnoxious teenagers. And we also cause more erosion (to fucking granite) than 1,000 years of rain.
Not to get all political, but this anti mountain biking due to erosion thing is total bullshit. The ultimate irony in the case of Purgatory Chasm is the fact that is was formed by erosion. So we're really just making it better :bigthumb:

That video is great. I like the quick pace of it. Natural riding, some bails, NICE!

So was it just a park ranger in an angry mood, deciding he didn't like the biking, or is no mountain biking the general rule at Purgatory?
I'd hate to drive all that way (in the future), just to get booted.

It was a DCR guy. Just some old coot, who doesn't like bikes, for whatever reason. He was nice about it, not like he was yelling or something. He gave us directions to a place we can go ride on a bike path. :luke: We've never really had a problem the other times we've been there.
At the end Bryan and Tom were uppping this huge concrete block near the parking lot in plain view of everyone (a pretty big crowd gathered) and no one said anything negative. So I think it was just that guy. The other ironic thing is the other part of the old coot's argument was about us disturbing other people who go there for the peace and quiet, yet almost all of those people stopped and watched us, most saying some variation of "that's so cool" and showing genuine interest.
Although Tom said on a previous ride one the the DCR guys told him to "keep both wheels on the ground" :momaru:

for the record too i've been thrown out of there hundreds of times.. once by a state po-po.. it's really only the end of the summer and end of winter they tolerate us.. other than that u gotta be stealth about it..

I love the move at 00:54 (Trevor?). SMOOTH!!!!!!! That is so cool.
Let me also clarify: I like the bails in the video because it makes me feel better about my sketchy riding, not because I like seeing you guys get hurt!!!! Bails make the video more realistic.

What you guys are doing in this video is what I continue to miss. even though I ride everyday, it isn't the same without a crew and some real terrain.
Looking good guys. Nice range of styles in there too. You guys have mod, stock, power, tech. and smooth (Akrigg-ish) flow.
Trevor takes the move of the day with that super stalled out, Chris Clark style nose in. He's got that Zebdi dancing. Makes me want to break out mine.
If anyone is around, I'll be up in NJ May 25-29th. I should have the Simtra too. Wouldn't mind tuning the very rusty natural skills and picking up a thing or two if anyone is around.
But damn, after seeing some of those crashes, my pallets and padded rubber floor is looking a lot more friendly than those rocks. :greddy:

Thanks to everyone for the comments!
You're right, Lance- not only is purgatory a great place to ride, but we had fun mocking the dcr guy and soem of the other park visitors all day. Brian was static-hooked on a really steep, tall tech line and some guy says 'fufanu that shit!'
the music in the intro is Lord of the rings or?
Yeah that's the hobbit theme from the Lord of the Rings.

hobbit theme ey.. how fitting..
fufanus for life!!

If anyone is going to do any Fufanu-ing it should be Trevor.
Fuf on mod would be totally un-sick
Now, if Aaron Lutze was there, he would have pulled that fuf...and with his "trials" bike no less.
OK let's not start that again.

Cool vid Bryan, thanks for taking the time to film, put it together, and post it.
Its funny how much smaller everything looks on video. That rock we kept trying to hook was like 4-4.5ft, but looks pretty small on film. :dunno:

As an Englishman, I think I object to the music.

Trevor, you know what you needed for that rock you were hooking....
a kicker!
Then you could have hit it to back wheel.
I would have "kicked" some of those leaves out of the way while I was at it.
But it looks like you made it up no problem like it was.

LT - believe me, I tried to find a kicker! It wasn't happening. I'm a bit out of practice, but I think a bunnyhop could work too. I was happy to just make it up it at all.
