View Full Version : Loose crank sleeve?

OK. My cranks were creaking. I tightened stuff up - no dice. Then, I noticed when I push up or down on my drive side pedal I get the noise (no cranking involved). There is a steel sleeve (It's the part that you thread the pedal into) set inside the crank arm. Turns out that this steel threaded insert is wiggling. What can be done to fix this? Am I in imminent danger if I don't fix it? Is my pedal about to fall off when I need it most?

Good idea. Although, the cranks are from 2005. I might be screwed.

Due to very weak casting hussefelts use a threaded insert...which is its downfall. If the crank threads arent damaged that bad, and you can still tighten them up/remove w/ ease you can use loctite rc680 on the threads. Clean both surfaces w. isopropyl alcohol, apply loctite on 3threads, snug up the insert, and leave then set for 24hrs...worked for me. If you continue to ride like that you will damage your cranks beyond repair, potentially making it a bitch to remove your pedal from the insert.

So, the insert is threaded into the crank and the pedal is threaded into it? Which direction is it threaded? How do you get it out/snug it up?

I don't think that the sleeve is threaded. Is it twisting or is it rocking?

Hussefelt cranks have a 2 year warranty, so give them a call or send them an email explaining your problem. You might want to avoid saying that it is a trials bike.

Did you overtighten the pedals? If you way overtightened the pedals, it could have broken the sleeve loose.

It wiggles up and down.
