I used to wear sixsixone pads, cheap and did the job. Now I don't even like wearing a pack, let alone pads. Haven't slipped a pedal in a long time ... I hope I don't put another hole in my leg for saying that .

I ran lizard skins for a while and may get another pair. (I loaned mine out and they never came back.) I run Roach FR shin/knee combos for jumping but I think they are too much for trials....

I've got some old UGP red shin guards. They're really comfy and don't slip, but they don't cover the knee and I don't know if you can get them anymore.

Knucklebones are my best ones yet, and not too much $. They are covered in balistic nylon on the outside, and the hard plastic is sewn inside the shin guard, I cant stand the ones that come out. I think I got 'em on beyond bikes.com? that or Jensonusa for ~30$, I'd buy 'em again for sure.
I used to use some sixsixone race lite pads (hard shell) which moved around a lot. I then got some soft pads (veggies I think) and they are so much better. Deffinately go soft rather than hard (at least when it comes to pads)

Soft pads only.
I rock the 661 Veggie wraps. They work beautifully and are somewhat comfy. How comfy can these things be anyway? You can find them for mad cheap online, like 20 bucks? Last years model is always on clearance somewhere. I would highly reccomend them. I can't spell reccomend....
If you are worried about sizing 661's website has an excellent sizing chart.

i got the last yrs for $13

Another vote here for the knucklebone... they don't get too hot (I have ridden all day in the bush with 'em on my AM bike), don't move and have lasted for ages.

i bought lizard skins a while ago and their nice but too hot and beastly. i did smack my shin really hard once and i didnt even feel it. anyone ever made their own??? i think this summer i going to make my own out of a old socks, plastic bottles, needle and thread. im not sure how a few layers of plastic bottle will work:dunno:. so long as im not hot, dont have skin hanging off the studs on my pedals, and minimal bruising ill be happy. veggies look like you might get a little hot?
the new protec ones looks nice but maybe too much unless you REALLY need them.
still looks the goods

i vote lizard skins. they are a little warm i wouldnt say they are too hot. but if you have large calves like me you may want put another couple passes with thread where the the straps ar attached. the seams on mine busted a little but other then that they are bad ass.

When I bought my Veggie wraps, temperature wasn't even an issue for me really. I live in FL, unless I ride naked I'm going to be dripping sweat.
To be honest, you should go to some of your LBS' and try on whatever they have.
The only reason I lucked out on my veggie wraps is the cheap price. If they were regularly priced I wouldn't have even risked it.
Protection isn't about being comfortable. Protection is sacrificing comfort in order to gain peace of mind. Thats how I look at it, and thusly wearing gear never really bothers me.

I have some of these and they are really good. They are basically the same as veggie wraps in terms of material, although they are slightly shorter. They have saved my shins many a time...

They stopped making the good Lizzard Skins. Now they just have some hard shelled, super toasty things that don't fit.

I need some XXL pads, does anyone know a company that sells them. The last time I was Interbike, 661 told me they were making XXL ones and I haven't see them out yet.

Works for me. A little bloodletting now and then is less an inconvienence that putting those things on all the time. But, then again it is hot as BALLS here in the Midwest.

If you dont use shin gaurds from the beginning, you learn how to not bash your pedals into your shins pretty quickly.

if people could learn to not slip on their pedals, they probably wouldn't slip anymore... this makes no sense, a pedal slip isn't a bike move you do incorrectly, its an accident that happens when you loose your balance on one foot before the other, or when you slide of and object and your shins slides down your pedal, and so on... I understand that you slip off less as you get better, but i don't think you LEARN not to hit your shins, you just learn to mess up less...

My shins are cursed.
I should wear them as a daily safety measure.
When it comes to trials, one day without them means sutures.
There are others as cursed as me.
If you are one of those whose flesh is destined to be red and bubbly, buy expensive shin guards. Wear them.

I think you just dissagreed with yourself
learning to not hit your shins = learning better balance or learning how to step/fall off your bike correctly when you mess up. Sure you dont consciously figure out how to avoid hitting your shins, but your body does learn to do it.

If you're just hopping around being a noob, you shouldn't need pads (wear a helm of course) I don't and haven't had "you know what" happen since I started last fall
get some nice wide platforms

Magnesium pedals are much better than double caged pedals when it comes to saving your shins. I like 661 4x4 pads because they protect your knees too and they're cost is not much more than regular shin pads.:bigthumb:

If you have never smashed your shin, you are not pushing it enough.
For hopping around and playing safe, you need only helmet.
Protection is mainly for cases you would never think will happen, like when one of your pedal-axle brakes on that 10 foot drop.. Can you imagine the force the other pedal would come back to your shin?
I go with 661, and Fox Racing.
