i've never used hs33's before - is it normal for the lever to squish all the way to the bar ? my other brake is a hope mono trial ...

no, its not normal, adjust your brakes to be as close to the rim as possible, also, check to make sure youve dialed the tpa(red nob) correctly

ya move the pads in closer, but not using the tpa knob. Loosen the mounting bolts and move the cylinders in closer. Also if it stops going to the bar but still feels squishy you can bleed the brakes with something other than magura blood. I like baby oil. Lever goes down, stops, and thats it. no play. Ya know now that i think of it, it is possible you have air in the lines too if your pads are adjusted close already, then definitely do a bleed.

Why not magura blood?

It's not exactly needed.
The internals of HS33's are plastic, so water will do fine. Plus it's a much thinner liquid than oil, so it'll feel a lot nicer, and make the brake more responsive.
You can pretty much use anything in HS33's...

With water, though, you need to make sure to lube the seals. Also, if you ride anywhere it gets below freezing you might want to mix in some anti-freeze. I had a buddies line freeze up on him this winter.
I do agree though, water definitely feels the best.

Pardon my ignorance...
If you use water, how do you lube the seals?

At a guess I would say squeeze the lever and lube the protruding pistons...and also lube in where the lever travels in and out.
I wonder if oil candel "oil" would work, even better, it's about the same consistancy as milk and its an oil...
WTF...I ride V-brake now...haha
